Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIT) is a recent therapeutic intervention for people with hemiplegia involving restraint of the non-involved extremity and structured practice with the more affected extremity. CIT involves restraint of the less affected extremity of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, along with practice with the more affected extremity.

United Spinal Association has released an updated version of the Accessible Air Travelâ€" A Guide for People With Disabilities. The revised edition includes expanded regulations for the Air Carrier Access Act. This is the law that mandates air travel accessibility for people with disabilities. Our revised edition includes the new regulations that take affect on May 13, 2009. This helpful booklet informs individuals with disabilities of their rights as passengers on commercial airlines and how to adequately prepare to ensure their air travel experience is enjoyable. It also provides valuable insight on a multitude of air carrier procedures, such as information about requirements for foreign airlines, what to expect in terms of equipment liability, how to file a complaint, and airport screening requirements.

Children with Cerebral Palsy often do not grow the same as other children. Children with CP are often shorter and thinner than other children of the same age. We do not know if this is normal, or if there could be a problem with nutrition or hormones, and so we are interested in discovering what is just right for a child with CP. The first step in understanding growth in Cerebral Palsy is to measure a large group of children with CP.

PubMed Abstract - Early surfactant administration with brief ventilation vs. selective surfctant and continued mechanical ventilation for preterm infants with or at risk for respiratory distress syndrome. Purpose of the purpose of this review was to compare outcomes between two strategies of surfactant administration in infants with RDS; prophylactic or early surfactant administration followed by prompt extubation, compared with later, selective use of surfactant followed by continued mechanical ventilation.

PubMed Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To thoroughly examine the literature dealing with life expectancy in children with cerebral palsy and mental retardation. This review paper comprehensively reviews the literature relating to survival in children with cerebral palsy and developmental disability. CONCLUSIONS: Literature review definitively shows that children with CP and DD have a diminished life expectancy, which can be assessed based on simple clinical examination findings.

Preterm infants are born with immature lungs and often require help with breathing shortly after birth. This currently involves administering 100% oxygen. Unfortunately, delivery of high oxygen concentrations leads to the production of free radicals that can injure many organ systems. Term and near-term newborns deprived of oxygen during or prior to birth respond as well or better to resuscitation with room air (21% oxygen) compared to 100% oxygen. However, a static concentration of 21% oxygen may be inappropriate for preterm infants with lung disease. Our study will investigate how adjusting the amount of oxygen given to sick preterm newborns will affect the ability to maintain a safe oxygen level in their blood

The Federation is a center for parents and parent organizations to work together on behalf of children with special needs and their families. A coalition of parent groups representing children with a variety of disabilities, the Federation operates a Parent Center in Massachusetts which offers a variety of services to parents, parent groups, and others who are concerned with children with special needs.

Most children have a preconceived notion that every day of summer should be exciting and adventurous. Children with special needs are no exception. As parents, we feel an obligation to provide our children with memorable summer breaks, without breaking the bank! Determining how to manage that day-to-day challenge can be exhausting for parents of a special needs child, especially when you factor in possible accessibility issues that may arise for children in wheelchairs or with mobility challenges.

Trakya University School of Medicine, Turkey study to evaluate the impact of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) on morbidity and mortality of newborn infants with perinatal asphyxia. The study concluded that after Neonatal resuscitation (RP) courses, the number of patients with perinatal asphyxia and with no resuscitation and also the duration of hospitalization decreased significantly, whereas the first minute Apgar scores increased significantly.

Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy (HABIT) in Children with Hemiplegia is a new intervention developed at Columbia University. HABIT aims to improve the use and coordination of both arms in daily function. It involves intensive bimanual training. Like CI therapy, it requires 90 hours of intensive therapy and it is performed in group settings with an emphasis of having fun. But unlike CI therapy HABIT focuses on improving the ability to perform bimanual activities. The efficacy of this new bimanual treatment for improving coordination with two hands is being tested.

Easter Seals Recreation and Sports - Recreation and Sports - Easter Seals offers the nation's largest network of recreation and camping programs for children and adults with disabilities. Accessible grounds and facilities, adapted equipment and trained staff allow participants to accomplish what they may never have thought was possible - like swimming, traversing a river or playing wheelchair tennis. Other programs provide less ambitious - but no less significant - activities that teach everyday living skills, such as planning an outing to a movie or museum. Easter Seals frequently partners with other agencies to provide inclusive activities. Recent collaborations have resulted in a summer picnic, holiday parties, a fitness class, and a fishing expedition.
