Testing range of motion in cerebral palsy - Ann Readapt Med Phys. 2007 - PubMed result - 0 views

  •
NIH PubMed Abstract - Testing range of motion in cerebral palsy. Objective of study was to To propose a standardized test of joint range of motion in paediatric patients with cerebral palsy, based on the opinion of a cerebral palsy specialist group (physicians, physiotherapists and surgeons) and literature review. Study concluded that a standardized testing of lower-limb-joint range of motion will allow for better communication between clinicians and will facilitate the development of a database. Care should be taken in the interpretation of the joint range-of-motion test results and realized only after reliability analysis of the test, especially interobserver reliability. A further step would be to develop an outpatient booklet for cerebral palsy that shows growth and weight curves, joint range-of-motion curves and curves of the principal radiographic measurements during growth.

ShuntCheck Accuracy in Detecting Shunt Obstruction Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) ... - 0 views

  •
Study is to examine the role of ShuntCheck and MR Imaging in evaluating the presence or absence of Shunt Obstruction in the patients of Hydrocephalus or Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) undergoing radionuclide test for suspected shunt obstruction. This is an exploratory study to determine how a non-invasive device can assist in detection of presence of flow in these patients.

An Aerobic Exercising Program on Respiratory Muscle Strength in Patients With Adolescen... - 0 views

  •
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) can change the respiratory dynamics and performance of the inspiratory and expiratory muscles, affecting ventilatory capacity. This was a randomized, controlled, open study to test the impact of a physiotherapeutic program of aerobic exercises on respiratory muscle strength, in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Patients with AIS were randomly assigned to the aerobic exercise-training program group or the no treatment group. There was a significant increase in Pimax and Pemax in the group which received physiotherapy.

Beneficial Effects of Antenatal Magnesium Sulfate (BEAM Trial) - NICHD - 0 views

  •
As many more premature infants survive, the numbers of these infants with health problems increases. The rate of cerebral palsy (CP) in extremely premature infants is approximately 20%. Magnesium sulfate, the most commonly used drug in the US to stop premature labor, may prevent CP. This trial tests whether magnesium sulfate given to a woman in labor with a premature fetus (24 to 31 weeks out of 40) will reduce the rate of death or moderate to severe CP in the children at 2 years. The children receive ultrasounds of their brains as infants and attend three follow-up visits over two years to assess their health and development.

Columbia University: Center for Cerebral Palsy Research :: HABIT - 0 views

  •
Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy (HABIT) in Children with Hemiplegia is a new intervention developed at Columbia University. HABIT aims to improve the use and coordination of both arms in daily function. It involves intensive bimanual training. Like CI therapy, it requires 90 hours of intensive therapy and it is performed in group settings with an emphasis of having fun. But unlike CI therapy HABIT focuses on improving the ability to perform bimanual activities. The efficacy of this new bimanual treatment for improving coordination with two hands is being tested.

Cerebral Function Monitoring in Premature Infants - NICHD - 0 views

  •
Observational study tests the feasibility of enrolling subjects and obtaining an amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) within the first 72 hours of life, a second aEEG recording between 72-168 hours of life, and weekly thereafter up to 36 weeks post-menstrual age. It will enroll 85-100 infants between 401-1,000 grams birth weight OR between 23 0/7 and 28 6/7 weeks gestational age born at the 7 participating NICHD Neonatal Research Network sites.

17OHP for Reduction of Neonatal Morbidity Due to Preterm Birth (PTB) in Twin and Triple... - 0 views

  •
Hypothesis of study is that among women with twin or triplet pregnancies, weekly injections of 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17OHP), started before 24 weeks of gestation, will reduce neonatal morbidity by reducing the rate of preterm delivery. This study involves two concurrent double-blinded randomized clinical trials of 17OHP versus placebo. Each trial will test the efficacy and safety of 17OHP in women with a specific risk factor for preterm birth. The two risk factors to be studied are: Twin pregnancy - Triplet pregnancy

New Common Pathway in Neurodegenerative Disease is a Possible Door to a Point of No Ret... - 0 views

"The focus of the study is on the plentiful neurons that communicate with each other through the neurotransmitter glutamate. While glutamate is a necessary excitatory substance in the nervous system, in excess, it overstimulates and becomes toxic - excitotoxic - to neurons. Fortunately, neighboring astrocytes can mop up the excess via molecular transporters embedded in their outer membranes. The chief transporter is a protein called EAAT2. Earlier Rothstein's group showed that astroglia - and their EAAT2 protein - are critical for normal neuron activity. In test rats whose astroglia lack the EAAT2 equivalent there's not only a flood of toxic glutamate but a resulting neuron death that leads to paralysis."

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation to Prevent Preterm Birth in High Risk Pregnancies - ... - 0 views

  •
Clinical Trial - Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplementation to Prevent Preterm Birth in High Risk Pregnancies - A recently completed trial of weekly injections of 17 alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17P) found significant effectiveness for 17P in preventing recurrent preterm birth. However, the group who received 17P in this trial still had a high rate of preterm birth. Several reports have shown that dietary supplementation of fish oil, which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, reduces the risk of preterm birth. This trial tests whether adding the Omega-3 supplement to 17P therapy has the potential for further reducing the risk of preterm birth in women who have previously had a spontaneous preterm delivery. The trial will compare Omega-3 fatty acid with placebo in women receiving 17P therapy.

Diagnosis of severe birth asphyxia and early predi... [J Perinat Med. 1994] - PubMed re... - 0 views

  •
PubMed Study Abstract: Ten indicators available during the first two hours of life, such as clinical criteria of neonatal distress and postnatal arterial blood gases, were compared with the neonatal neurological course in sixty full term newborns with significant birth asphyxia in order to test their value for the diagnosis and the short-term prognosis of severe birth asphyxia. Birth asphyxia was defined as severe when it was followed by symptoms of moderate or severe post-asphyxial encephalopathy.
