Why the iPad Will Not Save the Publishing Industry - woorkup.com - 0 views

  • Leaving purely technical considerations aside (in some cases the final result is better than in others), the general quality of those magazines is without doubt extremely high and the integration between classic and multimedia content makes their reading experience very pleasant and engaging. But there is a basic limitation that could play a significant role in preventing their widespread diffusion, thereby making them not competitive in terms of economic return. The problem is not the limited number of iPads in circulation, as some may think, but the difficulty – or the inability – to download single issues of a certain magazines on your device because of their excessive size, which usually is around 400 MB.

  • each download may take a period ranging from twenty to seventy minutes if you are connected to a wi-fi hotspot. If you use a 3G connection, instead, the download is inhibited and a message warns you that, due to the excessive size of the file, you must be connected to a wi-fi to continue to the download. Apart from the frustration generated by waiting too long for the completion of the download (especially if you consider that there are an infinite number of alternative sources of information available in a few seconds, for free, just surfing the web), when the user doesn’t have access to a wi-fi network, he is likely to quit the purchase altogether

  • This limit, which negatively affects sales volumes and profitability of editorial projects aimed at iPad users, will bring developers to rethink radically the structure of such contents and limit their size. Otherwise, a significant proportion of those users who have once experienced the frustration of the download will not want to repeat the purchase a second time.

Something it's not about how rich or engaging the contents are but how the ease of being able to reach for it is. ( infrastructure) Afterall would you bother buying a magazine from your local newsagent if you had to stand there and wait in a queue for 30 minutes or more.

Free Technology for Teachers: Adobe's Project ROME Looks Promising - 0 views

  • Project ROME allows users to create multimedia documents and presentations. ROME can also be used to create quizzes and to design websites. Users can build documents that include images, videos, and animations. Animations can be imported from an existing file or created from scratch within ROME.  Resizing of elements within any project in ROME is a simple matter of drag and drop resizing. Arranging elements is also a drag and drop process. Adding elements to a project in ROME is done by selecting from a large series of drop-down menus. Some parts of using ROME are quite intuitive, but as you might expect with a program that has many features, there are parts of ROME that will require you to follow a tutorial the first time you try it. Watch the video below for an overview of Project ROME.

E-learning: The future of education? - Education - Mail & Guardian Online - 1 views

  • The recent growth of ebooks and tablet computers, like the iPad, is fuelling the drive towards digital education. For the first time, institutions are thinking of innovative ways to incorporate digital content into learning programs. The potential to reach a global audience is also significant. And online learning need not be static or impersonal: on the contrary, it offers unparalleled opportunities for interactivity and open communication among students and teachers
  • Another attractive feature of online learning is that it is much more accessible than traditional tuition. Since resources can be spread instantly and for free to anyone in the world, learning is immediate, affordable and rewarding. It does not attract the hidden costs of contact based learning, like transport, material and stationery costs, which makes it valuable for less-privileged students. It also allows working people to gain valuable education in the time available to them, so that they can increase their skills and improve their working lives.
  • Many universities are now posting video lectures, reading materials and other resources for free online. The range of materials covers everything from introductory videos and podcasts to advanced textbooks and detailed research -- a true multimedia experience.

  • Gates says that it's not enough just to have good content: it needs to be organised in a useful way and backed up with a solid teaching support network. It is difficult to test knowledge or prove capabilities without structured academic programs. But this is where the internet can truly shine: an online course is not hampered by physical constraints or the high costs of full-time, contact-based learning. One teacher can easily oversee and support many students from anywhere in the world, and learning can be done at the student's pace, with access to a wider range of materials, discussions and resources than would be possible in a traditional physical learning environment.

Location-based learning: The context is mobile | Instructional Design Fusions - 3 views

  • Mobile devices have some unique affordances: They offer location-sensors (e.g., GPS, RFID, WLAN) and they can deliver multimedia content that is time- and place-relevant. Opportunities for embedded assessment can also be used to assess and fine-tune mlearning design.
  •
An interesting piece about how the unique affordances of mobile devices enable newer forms of learning.
