Google Plus Opens to All & Announces 9 New Features - 0 views

  • Hangouts - the video chat feature - have come to mobile, currently supporting Android 2.3+ devices, and iOS support is "coming soon." Hangouts also now have an "On Air" feature, which allows any Google Plus user to tune in and watch. Furthermore, Hangouts now offer screensharing, a shared sketchpad, and names for Hangouts. But perhaps the killer app is Google Docs in Hangouts, which will open up the possibility of live collaborative work (especially once Google Apps accounts get access).

For our ETs and VDs... Noticed any differences when using Google's Hangouts video chat lately? If you did, then you may be one of the lucky users who has already received an upgrade to 720p HD video. The company quietly started to roll out HD for Hangouts to a subset of its users in the last few weeks and hopes to complete the rollout soon

Video Chat Becomes Social Networking's New Battleground - 0 views

  •
"On Wednesday, Facebook announced that it had partnered with Skype to let Facebook users call one another from their camera-enabled computers, simply by clicking on a button on a friend's Facebook profile or from the chat window. After a one-time download of Skype's technology, the video calls look to be painless and simple for anyone to use. Compare that to Hangout, Google's new video chat in its still invite-only social network Google+. Hangout is designed as a group chat application for impromptu socializing with friends. To start one, you press a button declaring you are open to hanging out, choose which circle(s) of friends to send the invite to, and up to 10 people can be in the room at any one time. The loudest talker gets the big space up top - and the group can collectively talk or even watch YouTube videos together. As young Marty McFly once said in a different context, your kids are going to love it."

The Google+ Project - 1 views

Fascinating demo of Google+ features...  one of the neatest features I've seen in there is the "Hangouts" feature. Then Google+'s tagline caught my eyes. "It doesn't matter WHAT you do. It matters WHO you do it with." Reminded me about the power and priority of building closer relationships with your students (akin to Socrates and his disciples) to help make them more receptive to what you want to share with them. So just thinking: How can we help teachers tap into the trend of Google+ and other social networks to help their students in their learning and education?

Google brings Interaction to Education with Google+ Pages | Rebecca Coleman | Social Me... - 1 views

  • A recent study of Google+ showed that it is more popular with parents than students,  which could be a favorable indicator of how popular it is for those educators of the same generation.
  • One example of how teachers are using Google+ Pages to run their classrooms, is that of Mr. McDowell who teaches World History at West Hills High School. Mr. McDowell has made great use of Google’s tools to give students access to documents, schedules, presentations, videos and password protected areas like attendance and grade records.
  • access to Google+ tools and pages from any computer promotes interactivity on the site and is a big hit with educators

A good point to note. Educators are using Google+ for its easy userbility and interactivity
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Facebook doesn’t offer a platform that supports real-time interactions and information sharing like Google+.
  • Google+ still has a learning curve for all users
  • Google+ Pages provides control for sharing information by allowing you to sort your contacts into “circles”.
  • This provides a new dynamic in which great opportunities for tutoring can thrive.
  • create custom “hangouts” which brings people from within your circles that you select, to interact in a virtual room together.

A little backdated article in 2011, but I thought it would be good to start exploring possibilities of Google+ and using it in classrooms

  • Information on hangouts can also be pushed to Facebook and Twitter.
  • The startup was initially funded by Spring Singapore for $50,000 and it recently raised US$500,000 in seed funding in September. It has received backing from big names in the global technology scene. Joichi Ito from venture fund Neoteny Labs, who's also chief executive of Creative Commons and an early investor and board member of Twitter, and Batara Eto, who is co-founder and former chief technology officer of Mixi, Japan's largest social network, have joined foound's board of directors and advisory board respectively.
