Teaching your tiny tot these effective anti-bullying techniques helps to develop high self-esteem, effective problem-solving skills and the tools needed to settle playground disputes without violence or temper tantrums.

I am especially interested in the intersection of L2 learning and empathy-- I think that a deeper understanding of culture--differences and commonalities, helps to form a bridge between peoples-- In learning language, we learn humility and stepping into the unknown--trying on new ways of saying things and seeing the world.

I've never tried E-Pals but it looks promising if you want to find a "sister" class to team up with your class to write/chat. Anyone with experience with this site?
-
That's so funny that you just posted this...I posted a question a little bit ago about the same thing. I have heard of EPals, but have never actually used it. I wonder if it would be a lot of work for us as teachers?

I found this while sorting through my old bookmarks to add them to diigo. Anyone ever used this or heard of it?

I want to say that they have been around in a number of forms over many years - maybe even started at St Olaf College as Classroom to Classroom Connections back in the 90's?? But they've grown into a huge corporation now! These kinds of projects are the ones I like the best - when you get kids talking to each other!

How Do Tech Tools Affect the Way Students Write? | MindShift - 4 views

There was a hyperlink to an article about whether we should still teach cursive. Apparently high schools are not doing it any more. My son stopped cursive in about the 5th grade and didn't have to use it and now he is struggling at the university because he can't read when the professor uses cursive in anything, like comments on his papers. I have to print when I leave him a note. Wow, technology is wiping out one of the long-standing activities that took humans decades to develop.

I have to wonder if kids can write notes well without using cursive. I'd struggle and I still write by hand quicker than I can peck things out on a keyboard. Spell/grammar check are helpful, but I still wonder if the student pays any attention to corrections and can't write well without this automated help.
-
I like the balanced way this piece presents some of the pros and cons of technology in education. Just this week I had a conversation with another educator who has encountered recent studies suggesting a link between handwriting (of any kind) and certain cognitive development. Some schools are now emphasizing handwriting instruction because it helps boost students' academic achievement.
-
My daughter is 8 years old and she started learning cursive this year. So it must be back! I'm not sure if will help boost her achievement or not, but I'm glad she is learning it. I think the article made a good point about how students today have a short attention span and easily get off track. If they are typing a paper on the computer, for example, they can open a browser and start surfing the web. They don't necessarily stay focused on the task at hand. It is even hard for me sometimes. If I don't ignore email (just put it off until later, I mean), I would never get anything done!

What's the best way to teach languages? | Teacher Network | The Guardian - 7 views
-
Although this article is about British language education and it's two years old, my interest was piqued when I read it: ""Languages cannot be taught, they can only be learnt. The best way is to tell students right away that they are responsible for their own learning process, and the teacher is just a guide who has to motivate them."" Made me think about relevancy and how Tech is only one part of that.

Fascinating article. Quotes a professor of linguistics who suggests that one reason for the move to Task Based learning is that in the UK, unlike in Europe, students don't know English grammar - so teachers can no longer use that as a bridge between languages! The article also quotes Michael Erard, author of 'Babel No More,' - a study of people who speak multiple languages - says: "They use a mix [of methods], with a focus on accomplishing tasks, whether it's communicative tasks or translation tasks."
-
Yes, the Erard quote really gets to the heart of it: what combination of learning methods will work for each, individual student? Learning is personal and those who develop their own methods (hopefully with effective guidance) will go far.
-
Really interesting. I wonder if we changed the setting to the U.S. if the same difficulties would apply. I never really thought about grammar being discarded simply because students don't know it well enough. While I've found that most students we teach don't understand their mother tongue, I still think that the shift to task-based work had as much to do with the lack of real communication skills. Just teaching them grammar and relying on them to go abroad to learn to speak wasn't doing it. That being said, I think the mixture of methods is best, and by mixture I mean the integration of many methods into accomplishing a task. And I agree that the meta-learning is key.
-
I remember getting a comment from a student once, many years ago, that she had learned more about English grammar in my Spanish class than anywhere else... (sigh)

Hi Jan, Good article--it definitely addresses the common concerns and potential problems of using Twitter with students. I liked the part about the kids building a story with students from China! I also thought it was a good idea that the teacher created one account and then shared the password. I wonder how he achieved this on an international level? Thanks for sharing!

We don't "parse" verbs in Spanish... I don't really know what that is... conjugate? We also don't do much translating... I wonder how a person could use this idea in a more communicative way?
-
-
-
Now I read it - I should have known it was a Latin teacher talking about parsing...
-
It could be like a waterfall of tweets... hablar hablo hablas habla hablamos hablais hablan. Teacher calls out the verb and tense and each student (or student group) tweets in the collection of conjugations (parses??).

It’s hard to imagine anything less engaging for students than sitting around waiting while you try to load that video over a poor internet connection or figure out all the glitches with that awesome online game.Do your trial and error ahead of time, before you’re demonstrating media to the class.

While I agree with this, at some point you need a test group. I always try things out first with a section that I know can take a couple of glitches in stride.

I wish we had enough time to trial everything in advance! Plus, the issue is something might work when you trial it but not at the right time...
