  • Record an audio welcome message and put it on your blog (or wiki or web page.) Elementary students can practice their oral reading skills. You could even post them on your blog for parents and grandparents to hear. Each day have one student record “what we did in school today” and post it on your blog. Students in a foreign language class could record words or phrases and then email them to their teacher. Left your students with a substitute? Record a message to encourage your students to be on their best behavior!

      I used Vocaroo this week-- a simple app and easy to use that can fulfill a variety of needs for the classroom. I thought I could share some here with you...I am drawn to the second point about practicing and recording reading out loud. This past year with my elementary students, I found a great need to improve their understanding of sounds in Spanish, as well as building their confidence as "speakers" of the language. This gives me an opportunity to work on this issue further this upcoming year.

    I found that Canva is a great tool to create a infographic. It sometimes took hours to find the infographic I wanted online, but now I can create the one in a way I want. I just tried to make one in Japanese:) . I would like to see other ways to use this tool.

    I really enjoyed using Canva in my project this week. It's really nice and easy to use (and I like the app for my phone). I can imagine using the poster project and the student profile project in my classroom.

    I tried this one at the beginning of the week, but gave up after not being able to type accent marks in Spanish. I like the idea of creating posters or "one pager" presentations.

The article shows that CMC performance is very similar to FTF--this suggests to me that recorded Skype conversations (or similar recorded online CMC work) could serve as a good way to practice and assess interpersonal communication skills.

      I chose this quote because these results suggest that multimedia sources are tools that can be useful to attend different students' learning styles (some students learn better through reading, others through listening, others through making connections with images). Besides, it provides evidence of the effect of media sources on language acquisition which is also linked to authentic material. This quote also presents the difficulties that media sources can generate in those students who are not used to manage information presented in diverse modalities at once.

    I agree that what we need now more than ever is collaborative, community building exercises. Last semester when we went online, at least we knew our students and they knew us. In the fall, if we go online, there will be students that we haven't met and built a rapport with in person. It will be more important than ever to foster an interactive environment and focus on meaning and communication.

  • MovieTalk works because it links meaning between the language used by the teacher to the images on the screen. In other words, it makes the linguistic input comprehensible to the student. “Comprehensible” of course, is a bit of a gray term—meaning that something is reasonably able to be understood by the audience—and it is up to the teacher to employ skills such as teaching to the eyes and using comprehension checks to guarantee that the comprehensible language is actually comprehended.

      This paragraph is a good reminder for me that the responsibility of making Spanish comprehensible to my novice learners lies with me. It is the teacher's responsibility to make sure the language is comprehended.
  • Sometimes, I select MovieTalks because of their topic: the content relates to something that we are studying or discussing in class. Other times, I select MovieTalks because of the vocabulary: I know that I can talk about the video using the same words that I am working with in class with my students. And still other times, I select MovieTalks because they are just so dang fun and easy and I plop them into the middle of a unit for no reason at all!

      No difference really. I sometimes will take screenshots from the video and put them into google slides. Especially if the action moves quickly and I have trouble pausing the video exactly where I want to. This also works for students who are impatient and want to just watch the video. I tell them that the link to the video is at the end. there are a lot of really fun short videos on youtube that are good for this. The movie does make it more like a story. You can also do this technique with just a picture.
