I love this idea of an interactive bulletin board! Plus, this could be used as an interpretive activity w/o bulletin board: students describes someone/thing and listener has to decide who/what it is and draw or identify what is said. These recordings could be used over several classes/years.

Screencasting Tools: Camtasia vs. Screencast-O-Matic - Instructional Technology Blog | ... - 2 views

Whenever I ask my students to use a new web app I go record myself signing in and doing an example.
  • Recording your computer screens into a digital video (screencasting) for class tutorials can come in handy when flipping the classroom.  You can record yourself using an online tool, reciting a presentation, or guide students through a website.  You can even record streaming video online – though you will still have to follow copyright rules when recording online video.  This post will compare two popular screencasting tools: Camtasia (which cost money) and Screencast-O-Matic (free).

Technology and Teaching: Finding a Balance | Edutopia - 5 views

  • I've used Google Drive nearly every year that I've taught. In my opinion, it's one of the best tools to impact the writing process since the red pen. In the classroom, Google Drive can be leveraged in a variety of ways. However, this post is about finding a happy balance between teaching and integrating technology. The last time I used Drive, I created a shared class folder with students before the first day of school. I populated it with dated folders and assignments that all students had access to. Similarly, I had students share a folder with me for homework on their first day. This folder would be their digital dropbox.

I use google drive and google folders as an essential part of my teaching too. Stuxents notes are also in a folder within the folder created by me. Google classrooms folders are also there.

Point/Counterpoint - a discussion on "is technology killing critical-thinking skills?" I think they're coming from the same point of view, but expressing it differently. A lot of frustration with internet filters...
  •
We can continue a discussion here in the Diigo group about articles, tools, or whatever the group finds and bookmarks. You can also put "sticky notes" right on the article page itself - no one but the logged-in group members can actually see the notes. This is one way we can keep the "group momentum" going after the institute ends. Add your thoughts!

Free Technology for Teachers: 7 Task Management Tools for Students - 1 views

It's getting close to that time of year when teachers and students will be returning to school for the fall semester. The great thing about the start of a new school year is that it brings new resolutions for both teachers and students.

VoiceThread - Support - Resources - Publications Language Learning - 1 views

  • Abstract: Collaborative social interaction when using Web 2.0 in terms of VoiceThread is investigated in a case study of a Swedish university course in social psychology.
  • The results show that use of Web 2.0: a) supports students' reflections concerning their own and others' thoughts and emotions, b) supports individual students and integrates them into a work group, and c) develops students' identification and awareness in relation to self, a task and others.
  • Reflection is a core component of many outdoor education programs with many educators relying on journal writing as a means of facilitating reflection.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • We speculated that it might be worth trying to engage these students with "their technology," and in this paper we explore if and how Web 2.0 technologies can support student journal writing behaviours in outdoor education.
  • With the advent of Web 2.0 tools, additional language educators can extend their classrooms beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar walls to communicate with the world. One of the best ways to do so is to introduce VoiceThread into language lessons. In doing so, students can create conversations that extend across the classroom or across the globe.
  • This review takes a look at current digital storytelling protocols and strategies currently displayed through VoiceThread creations, as well as detailed strategies conducive for a powerful digital storytelling tool such as VoiceThread.
  • This article documents the curricular decisions made by a teacher educator research team whose guiding theoretical focus for intern practice is dialogic instruction. Over a 2-year sequence, teaching interns used video and Web 2.0 technologies to respond critically to and revise their teaching practices in collaboration with peers and instructors.
  •
I found this by chance just exploring around. If you check the SUPPORT section on the VoiceThread site, you will find a list of publications. They posted a collection of abstracts with links of scholarly articles written about using VoiceThread for language learning, K-12, higher education and professional development. I just skimmed through the lists, and some of the articles are accessible, while some are behind a password.

Seven Ways to Use Google Docs to Support Bilingual Student Writers | EdSurge News - 0 views

  • Even though some of my students may not have regular access to a computer at home, they can access Google Docs from anywhere, including their phones.
    • cwelton

This is an important factor for me when I am thinking about integrating a web-based technology--my students all have very different levels of access, so I want to be as inclusive as possible of their various capacities to engage.
  • students also know I will look at the “Editing History” to hold them each accountable.
    • cwelton

      Really important to high schoolers!
  • With Google Docs, they can quickly find the right word for their writing with Google Translate.
    • cwelton

or through a technology like ReadLang...it's interesting to think about integrating Google-based platforms with other web-based tech
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • What’s more important is that I can provide feedback without drawing dark red lines across their writing, an experience that can be discouraging to many writers (including myself). Instead, we use Comments, Editing, or Suggesting to provide less invasive feedback; we can also share audio feedback right in the document using Kaizena, a Google Doc add-on. Students can receive immediate feedback multiple times throughout the writing process--and I don’t have worry about dragging stacks of paper home!
    • cwelton

I'm curious to look at this Kaizena...in addition to commenting/suggesting, I also use colors to clarify my edits for students (I do this on paper, too)--different colors represent different kinds of errors, for example, purple means there is an error or lack of clarity in vocabulary choice, red means the verb is misconjugated, etc.

Accelerating English and Math on the Go - Language Magazine - 3 views

  • In addition to taking classes, she supplements her education by using Learning Upgrade, a smartphone app with English and math lessons for adults.
  • Along with our face-to-face instruction and tutoring, we offer an additional resource to our adult students: educational software via mobile technology.
  • This access to educational software allows those with limited scheduled availability, or those who do not yet have an assigned tutor, to learn at their own pace and on their own time.

  • In addition to taking classes, she supplements her education by using Learning Upgrade, a smartphone app with English and math lessons for adults.
  • The app’s 300 lessons are designed by educators and use songs, videos, and games to engage even the most reluctant of students. Every level provides practice problems, accompanied by immediate intervention and remediation with multimedia supports.
  • I use the app when I have a little bit of time, anywhere. Sometimes I’m in the laundry, waiting between washing and drying.”

This is one advantage of technology: anywhere, anytime!
  • Both generations are equally willing to help one another bridge the gap, which in turn boosts the effectiveness of both approaches.
  • So far, the use of smartphones by students at Midland Need to Read has accelerated the learning process, giving students the motivation needed to improve their English language
  •
In my district, we are always being asked to connect our language teaching to other disciplines. Using Smartphone to do so is smart. However, not all of my students have these devices. They can definitely share a device. I like how this article is geared toward adult learners who can't or don't have time to attend physical classes. The App allows them to access this knowledge anywhere anytime. Thanks Akiko.
