    When I was video recording with Flipgrid interactively at the beginning of the training course, I already thought I found a very useful tool for my students of elementary Chinese in a hybrid class for the upcoming semester. Having watched this step-by-step YouTube introduction to it, I'm confident they are going to like this platform and be definitely benefited with all its video, audio, and drawing features in the remote interactive learning.     Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been discussing creating new FlipGrid assignments with my colleagues, but have never personally used it before. It seems like the least intimidating student video platform that I've seen so far. I love the snapchat-esque filters, stickers, etc... that users can play with.

    I am also thinking of trying it in the fall after I heard a lot of good things about it. I prefer it to VoiceThread (I really did not like the chaotic presentation of the different submissions). And it can be integrated into Canvas, but I still have to figure out the details of that (would I leave comments in FlipGrid or Canvas?).

    His videos are so helpful! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know if Flipgrid integrates with Sakai? A big concern for me is to keep things simple and streamlined for students. Sending them information through different channels seems to just ask for things to get overlooked or lost. Thanks!

    It sound like this guy is in the right place at the right time! I love reading but honestly video tutorials can be sooo helpful and nice to watch when they are well produced! I've seen in his channel another tool I love and I haven't used for a while: Adobe Spark.

Teacher Educator Technology Competencies - Learning & Technology Library (LearnTechLib) - 1 views

    "Abstract The U.S. National Educational Technology Plan recommends the need to have a common set of technology competencies specifically for teacher educators who prepare teacher candidates to teach with technology (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Technology, 2017). This study facilitated the co-creation of the Teacher Educator Technology Competencies (TETCs). The TETCs define the competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) all teacher educators need in order to support teacher candidates as they prepare to become technology-using teachers. The TETCs shed light on the roles and responsibilities of teacher educators who address technology within their courses. A highly collaborative research approach was used to develop the TETCs which involved the crowdsourcing of technology-related literature, a Delphi method for expert feedback, and an open call for public comment. As a result, 12 competencies with related criteria were identified. The TETCs should be viewed as a first step in a larger reform effort to better address technology integration in teacher preparation programs. The release of the TETCs provides future research opportunities including, but not limited to, implications for course design, relevant faculty development for teacher educators, and policy implications."

      "The conversations were never lost" - this is a great point!  Students could read and re-read past conversations.  With a traditional speaking/listening conversation, it isn't possible to read at all, let alone re-read.

I wanted to share this one because the author explains how to use the tool to entice students to create an extended text that they can share with other students for comments. Combining the post-its to paragraphs and an overall texts is also a great way to look at text strucure overall.     There was a hyperlink to an article about whether we should still teach cursive. Apparently high schools are not doing it any more. My son stopped cursive in about the 5th grade and didn't have to use it and now he is struggling at the university because he can't read when the professor uses cursive in anything, like comments on his papers. I have to print when I leave him a note. Wow, technology is wiping out one of the long-standing activities that took humans decades to develop.

    I have to wonder if kids can write notes well without using cursive. I'd struggle and I still write by hand quicker than I can peck things out on a keyboard. Spell/grammar check are helpful, but I still wonder if the student pays any attention to corrections and can't write well without this automated help.

    I like the balanced way this piece presents some of the pros and cons of technology in education. Just this week I had a conversation with another educator who has encountered recent studies suggesting a link between handwriting (of any kind) and certain cognitive development. Some schools are now emphasizing handwriting instruction because it helps boost students' academic achievement.

    My daughter is 8 years old and she started learning cursive this year. So it must be back! I'm not sure if will help boost her achievement or not, but I'm glad she is learning it. I think the article made a good point about how students today have a short attention span and easily get off track. If they are typing a paper on the computer, for example, they can open a browser and start surfing the web. They don't necessarily stay focused on the task at hand. It is even hard for me sometimes. If I don't ignore email (just put it off until later, I mean), I would never get anything done!

      I did not mean to highlight so much. Can't find the "undo" highlight. I believe the paragraph starting with "If we can get our FL students..." is important because as FL teachers we are always working towards getting out students to speak in the target langauge and with as much authenticity as possible. By working with an SNS then they might be more apt to use their L2 skills in a more authentic way outside of the classroom as mentioned in the paragraph.

      Great comment! SNS are a way to help students connect class with the real world and someone besides peers and instructors. Interaction through SNS is practice in the target language with speakers of that language, helpful for when they study abroad, for when they graduate and find a job where they interact with Spanish speakers in the case of my students population. These kinds of interactions build on confidence and improvement of speaking skills.

    Fascinating article. Quotes a professor of linguistics who suggests that one reason for the move to Task Based learning is that in the UK, unlike in Europe, students don't know English grammar - so teachers can no longer use that as a bridge between languages! The article also quotes Michael Erard, author of 'Babel No More,' - a study of people who speak multiple languages - says: "They use a mix [of methods], with a focus on accomplishing tasks, whether it's communicative tasks or translation tasks."

    Yes, the Erard quote really gets to the heart of it: what combination of learning methods will work for each, individual student? Learning is personal and those who develop their own methods (hopefully with effective guidance) will go far.

    Really interesting. I wonder if we changed the setting to the U.S. if the same difficulties would apply. I never really thought about grammar being discarded simply because students don't know it well enough. While I've found that most students we teach don't understand their mother tongue, I still think that the shift to task-based work had as much to do with the lack of real communication skills. Just teaching them grammar and relying on them to go abroad to learn to speak wasn't doing it. That being said, I think the mixture of methods is best, and by mixture I mean the integration of many methods into accomplishing a task. And I agree that the meta-learning is key.

      Still not sure about the relationship of all of these social networking tools to FERPA. Can you require students to post work on a site not run by the school ... and if so, what happens if there is a security compromise? These are all tools that I would use personally, but am uncomfortable advocating their use to a wider audience without explicit permission ... which is an incredibly time consuming process.

    "they" would say no without even reading/listening to my reasons. Better to ask forgiveness than permission but it may not be worth your job and it's definitely not worth the safety of students.
