You can insert your own quizzes into YouTube videos. This might be a fun way to test students. "Using Blubbr you can create interactive quizzes that are based on YouTube clips. Your quizzes can be about anything of your choosing. The structure of the quizzes has a viewer watch a short clip then answer a multiple choice question about the clip. Viewers know right away if they chose the correct answer or not. To create a quiz on Blubbr start by entering a topic for your quiz. After entering your topic enter a search for a video about that topic. Blubbr will generate a list of videos that you can select from to use in your quiz. When you find a video that works for you, trim the clip to a length that you like then write out your question and answer choices." T/H R. Byrnes

This free quiz app allows you to compete with other players around the world. For CEFR level B1-B2, i.e., fairly advanced. Practices vocabulary and grammar, and works with both Android and iOS.

This brief article by Tom Robb outlines a great new Moodle application that is free if your school already uses Moodle, or accessible online where you can have your own page for quiz access. The add-on offers a short quiz of 10 randomized questions for almost 2,000 commonly read books used for extensive reading programs with the major graded reader series. These are simple instructions for creating an easy T-F or even MCQ quiz using Powerpoint. This is a nice backup if you can't get online to SurveyMonkey. It might be a good challenge for students to create their own quizzes or a kind of flashcard set.

A video on how to use Keek to make and share short video messages. Although limited to only 36 secs, this might be a good application for beginning learners, or for a quick pronunciation quiz (you will see who is taking that quiz!) You can also embed a finished recording in your blog or wiki, as well as sending it by email. A good way to have students create a short, practiced conversation. Also has smartphone apps for mobile recordings, RSS feed to follow, and links to Facebook, Yahoo, and Twitter.

A study on reading of Norewegian 10th graders on paper and on PDFs on a computer screen. The paper group had better comprehension because the paper group could spread out documents, while the PDF group had to tab back and forth while taking the quiz. Low resolution moitors also may have influenced the study. A high resolution screen would allow the reader to see all the pages of the article at a glance. This study is an interesting adjunct to my article on Reading Electronically.

Very short videos--36 sec--may be good for low level students to practice initial speaking/listening. Also has apps for various smart phones. Might be good for a quite pronunciation quiz, for example. The teacher can then send back a short video message with corrections, modeling, etc.

Sounds like a useful program to have.

This page explains how to create a Google form. You can make a quiz for your students and email it to them, collecting data from the form. You can require respondents to sign in to use the document, which helps with security. See the sidebar on the left for more instructions and tutorials.
