Nik's Learning Technology Blog: Animating vocabulary - 2 views

  •
"Collect up gifs related to any vocabulary area you want to teach or revise. Embed them in an html page on your desk top and start a collection. Each time you add new ones send the html page to your students. (They will need to have a live connection on their computer to be able to view the gifs) Ask them to make notes of any words they relate to the images they see." This is another neat little tool with notes on how to use it from the very extensive collection by Nik Peachey. I'd suggest having the students make animated vocabulary gifs of words they want to learn/find useful.

AppShed - Build HTML5, iPhone and Android apps online for schools, education and business - 0 views

  •
This cross-platform app -- iPhone and Android -- lets students create their own games and instructional programs. Free for teachers and students, you need to sign up for an account, but you can work on a computer to create the HTML5. Learning games can be dreary, but creating them can be very interesting for students. The frontpage shows middle school learners working away, so this might be good even for younger learners.

This tool, imElfin, is recommended (by its owners) for safe download of YouTube videos: "Sites similar to KEEPVID are SAVEVID, ClipNabber and Deturl.Com. Just like KEEPVID, these sites require Java plug-in installation, fill with ads, and appear less secure. The best KEEPVID alternative I would recommend to you is an independent tool, imElfin YouTube downloader. While online YouTube downloader sites relate a lot with browsers, this program is separate from browsers, does not require a Java applet, and will not risk your computer at all. " http://www.imelfin.com/is-keepvid-safe-4-things-you-should-know-about-keepvid.html#.VVyYZKbfgUy It is free for 30 days, but is relatively inexpensive ($30 US).

Tynker - About - 1 views

  •
"Tynker is a new computing platform designed specifically to teach children computational learning and programming skills in a fun and imaginative way. Tynker is inspired by Scratch from MIT. It is a completely browser-based implementation written using Open Web standards such as Javascript, HTML5, CSS3 and does not use Flash. "Tynker's language extensions, built-in physics engine, character editors and other tools make it fun and easy for kids to unleash their creativity. Schools love Tynker because it offers them an easy to use cloud-hosted system for delivering a customized Computer Science course across multiple grades with a ready to use curriculum, classroom management and more. Tynker is the platform of choice at many leading schools - see what educators are saying." This looks like an interesting, creative way to unleash students' curiosity. I'm assuming it's for younger kids, but older students may enjoy it too.
