Some interesting objections to Sugata Mitra's Hole in the Wall and the SOLE project he proposed at TED. Children need supervision. But I am reminded of Summerhill where children had a good deal to do with the kinds of questions that were asked and input into how they came to be answered, or at least responded to. Social organization is not natural and turning kids loose on computers doesn't have just happy endings.

This is a tool recommended by a Webhead for creating an eportfolio. Sign up is free and there is a special section for educators. Like many new online tools, this may eventually become not-free bu in the meantime it looks like a good place to collect and display student work. Allows for all types of media and you can organize in a variety of ways. Media can be uploaded from your computer or from various social media you use. A little slow and clunky, but usable.

"You can create your own slides with the variety of tools available. More importantly, you can capture the screen shot and make notations directly on it." "Doceri is certainly a whiteboard app - and a great one. But it also allows you to control and use your pc apps remotely. So your presentation can consist of a pc app and then switch to a whiteboard display, all from your iPad." This seems like a great app for creating presentations while also controlling a smartboard and your computer from your iPad.

An excellent article on using mobile tech. The same discussion of how to use the technology has been taking place with computers for 2 decades, at least. Here is an example of teachers who "get it." "Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students' creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students' experiences in school. Instead of focusing on what was coming out of the iPad, they were focused on what was going into it."

Using text messaging with computer projection to let students show what they learned. Can be used for very instantaneous feedback on a lesson in class. But as I watch the video, it seems some students keep right on texting (elsewhere) after the lesson is finished?

Explanatory video and description of how students use slideshows/presentations to "go deep": "a very simple tool, with a low 'barrier' to entry (e.g., easy to train students to use), and with a very significant outcome for students - a rich, well, designed presentation with deep written information. Kids will find it 'cool' to have the computer 'speak' their words, so that's a nice hook too."

Continuing improvements in speech recognition technology may lead to some useful CALL applications to ESL/EFL: "By the use of automatic speech recognition (ASR), oral tasks can be practiced more easily because it is the computer itself which understands and gives feedback to the learner so that the learner feels much more involved, and in contrast to traditional methods, a learner can enjoy engaging in activities more."

An interesting theoretical model that shows visually some of the things we in CALL-IS have been saying over the year. Computers can redefine what teaching and learning is, bu maybe we have to go through everything else in SAMR first.

Includes video lessons as well. Might be a good activity for a low intermediate class of students getting used to using computers and the Web.

Watch TV shows on your computer. You may wish to use excerpts from episodes in your class as conversation starters or models for social interactions to be play-acted.

This won't work well with feathery hair or gauzy material. The computer imaging needs sharp outlines. But fun to try it out if you are into images/photography.

Play your presentations without an Apple TV, through any Mac or Windows computer, from your iPad or iPhone.

You can now use a third-party app to mirror your iPad/iPhone on a computer (Mac or Windows). This app is now called Reflector, however. Check it out at http://www.airsquirrels.com/reflector/. Play your presentations without a projector.

Points out the advantages of using a tablet device for content-creation. It's fast, mobile, and economical: "We've had computers in schools for years, but in reality many (most?) classroom teachers don't and never did have their students making podcasts, movies, eBooks and websites. Doing so seems too time consuming and for many non-technical teachers the learning curve appears disproportionate to the benefits realised. "But producing comparable creative content on an iPad is relatively quick, simple, yields impressive results with minimal fuss, and the learning curve is … well, there almost isn't one! There is no need to connect an external microphone (the built-in one is better than that in any laptop), no need to adjust recording levels, no need to use a pop-filter. No need to import media from a recording device to the editing device (becasue they are one and the same), and it's unnecessary to allow 10 minutes at the end of a class, to save, unplug devices, shut down and stow the laptops. Instead, when the bell sounds, students simply flip their iPad cases closed and walk to the next class!"
