Free PowerPoint templates to make your own animated slides. In PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 there are many already defined animated effects that you can use. For example, you may choose to use cool animations for PowerPoint like Cover effects, Blinds effect, Shape Diamond effect, Wheel effect and even more. Usually you start with your PowerPoint presentation file with no effects. Once you start building your slides you can add new effects to the slide transitions. When playing the presentation then your audience will see a transition between the slides."

R. Byrne: "Wideo is a nice tool for creating Common Craft-style videos. You can create animated videos on Wideo by dragging and dropping clipart and text in storyboard frames. You set the position and animation sequence for each element in each storyboard frame. When you have completed your storyboards Wideo generates a video for you. " Older students could, of course, create videos themselves to instruct others.

Stop-motion animation would be a great project for middle school and high school students. Teaches planning and patience.

"Mapping History contains hundreds animated and interactive maps from key events in the history's of the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Africa. The U.S. maps are sorted chronologically and by event or era. The European maps section is categorized more by topic and appears to be still under construction. The Latin America section is sorted into three regions (Caribbean, Central America, South America) and there are four African maps, each one shows the continent's division and political borders at various points of history. This site has animated libraries of English, German, and Spanish, with animated articulatory diagrams, words in context, etc. Might be more useful for advanced students of phonology and teachers than for students.

Games and activities to help learn names of animals. For young learners.

"Collect up gifs related to any vocabulary area you want to teach or revise. Embed them in an html page on your desk top and start a collection. Each time you add new ones send the html page to your students. (They will need to have a live connection on their computer to be able to view the gifs) Ask them to make notes of any words they relate to the images they see." This is another neat little tool with notes on how to use it from the very extensive collection by Nik Peachey. I'd suggest having the students make animated vocabulary gifs of words they want to learn/find useful.

"Real-world learning experiences can significantly improve children's knowledge in a matter of just days, a new study suggests. "Researchers found that 4- to 9-year-old children knew more about how animals are classified after a four-day camp at a zoo. "It wasn't that children who attended just knew more facts about animals, the researchers noted. The camp actually improved how they organised what they knew - a key component of learning. "This suggests the organisation of knowledge doesn't require years to happen. It can occur with a short, naturalistic learning experience," said Layla Unger, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher in psychology at The Ohio State University." A very, very small study, but supports intuitive notions of the neccesity of real-world, real-life experiences.

Turn your words into a 3D animated movie, creating online, with any browswer, or on your desktop (Windows only). This looks like an interesting way to have students present what they have learned. [Thanks to Christel Broady from the CALL-IS community list.]

Infographics are all the rage. I think they used to be called graphs or illustrations, but they have the flair of lots more visuality -- colors, icons, photos, animation, and interactivity are all part of these applications. R. Byrne's describes them all and has links to some of these tools, plus a few extras.

This looks like fun, and would be great for students doing projects to add some spice to their work.
