You can capture photos from a Webcam, upload images from your computer, use Flickr images, or borrow images from a Website to create an animated gif image. Very nice little tool, and it also can be uploaded on Twitter.

I think this includes making those clever drawings that are speeded up in animation. The tool would be good for student-student instructional videos or for your own flipped classes.

This animation program is purportedly easy to use and Internet safe, also having a blocker for bad words, weapons, and alcohol. No drawing required. A 14-day trial period is probably enough to try it out, but there is a school-license available.

Dvolver is a simple online cartoon movie maker (formerly Dfilm). Students select a background scene and add a type of scene, characters, costumes, music, etc., and write dialogue. The program then runs the scenario as an animated movie. Note: Some character costuming will be offensive to conservative students.

This blog page describes two cartoon software sites for students to use in creating animated stories. Good for writing and thinking processes. GoAnimate is for middle school- high school students (ages 11-17) and DomoAnimate is for young students.

An excellent article on using mobile tech. The same discussion of how to use the technology has been taking place with computers for 2 decades, at least. Here is an example of teachers who "get it." "Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students' creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students' experiences in school. The New York Times offers poetry paired with visuals, in this case an animation, and music, as well as two or more related poems. Readers are asked to write what they think, and the comments are very interesting also. Some adult content may be found in the sidebar, so this is for older students, not small children, though the idea is a good one for inspiring writing at any age. You may be able to strip the video and text and use the materials offline (being careful of copyright issues).

From Russell Stannard's Teacher Training videos: MessageHop allows you to "Load up pictures, add your text about them and then create various animations. This is such a simple tool to use. Great for lower level students, it encourages them to write and alllows them to personalise their content. They can share their creations on the internet."

R. Stannard shows how to use Bubblr to make cartoon strips or anime novella with your students for writing activities that can be embedded in a blog or website and shared by email.

Open source content and animations for teachers

Blog that tells how to use the PowerPoint template to make a visual puzzle. Might be fun to try with a class of learners--they make the puzzles for each other.

An app to create your own games to share or sell in the app store. this might be fun for middle school students/young learners to use in a creative project. Video tutorial shows how to add animated characters directly from a smart phone or on paper. Looks time-consuming, but fun.
