R. Byrne: "A featured resource on MoMA Learning is this video containing five tips for teaching with works of art. The video not only lists the tips, it contains examples of using these tips to teach art history and art appreciation lessons to students." Most of the great art museums and natural history museums of the world have websites with instructional materials of very high quality. It's worth some time to explore what they offer and figure out how to adapt their resources for your classes. One of the other excellent resources on MoMA Learning is this glossary of art terms. In many cases the definitions in the glossary contain links to multiple examples of each term. "If This Then That helps you automate tasks like saving your Pinterest pins to your Evernote account, setting text alerts for calendar events, and sending email attachments directly to your Dropbox account. There are thousands of formulas, "recipes" is what IFTTT calls them, available in the gallery of recipes." Byrne suggests uses for teachers, but this might be an good place for students to try out simple programming skills. t/h R. Byrne

R. Byrne: "Over the course of the school year our students create some fantastic digital products. Building a digital portfolio is a great way for students to look back at everything they've done and organize it into a cohesive package. The following five tools are good services for creating digital portfolios." As always, Byrne gives some good brief examples of the kinds of lessons the tools can be used for. He includes Silk, Dropr, Google Sites, Weebly, and eduClipper. Some instructional videos included.

R. Byrne explores 5 excellent tools for podcasting or recording speech for listening/speaking practice. One in particular, AudioBoom, offers users a way to synchronize sound recorded with images. Byrne includes short instructional videos, too.

R. Byrne offers an overview of OTUS, a mobile learning environment to distribute assignments, quizzes, polls, readings, etc., to iPads. It can now also be used with browers on laptops and Chromebooks. The Otus YouTube channel has detailed directions for how to use the various elements of the service.

R. Byrne: "One of the problems I run into when trying to find documents, videos, or folders that I have saved in my Google Drive folder is trying to find them again quickly without having to dig through the myriad of my created folders. I also want the ability to quickly share with my students folders that have documents or videos without having to send them a link to each one. With these concerns in mind, I felt that combining one of the best visual web resources (Symbaloo) with one of the best storage resources (Google Drive) was the best way to go. " The article shows how G-Drive and Symbaloo can be used together, with an instructional video. It also offers tips on using the two tools for student research projects. Organization of the tiles in the Symbaloo webmix, and the folders in G-Drive is promoted -- a good lesson for anyone whose desktop and files/folders are cluttery. Symbaloo might also serve as a mind-map for a research project, collecting related sites together, and/or tagged by color. I use Symbaloo as my Firefox desktop -- all the sites I want to find fast are there, not just the ones I have used most recently, which is what Firefox offers when a blank tab/window is opened. Symbaloo also means that when you switch from device to device the same set of tiles is viewable. Run out of room? You can organize tabs with different sets of tiles.

R. Byrne talks about several popular tools that might be of interest, including Padlet, Storyboard That, Thinglink, and ClassDojo. Each of these is worth exploring if you haven't seen them before.

R. Byrnes has found some good sites for young learners, including PBS Kids and a Council of Europe game. Topics include cyberbullying as well as online safety.

"If you're like me you probably have accounts on more than one cloud storage service. I have accounts on Box, Google Drive, Dropbox, and SugarSync that I use regularly. MultCloud is a service that allows me to tie them all together in one place. MultCloud does more than just provide a single log-in for all of the cloud services that I use. It also allows me to move files between services with a simple drag-and-drop." T/H R Byrne, though I don't have that many cloud servers, this might make sense if you are reaching the free limits in your account(s).

"WordWriter is a new writing tool from BoomWriter. WordWriter allows teachers to create vocabulary lists that they want students to incorporate into a writing assignment. Assignments are distributed directly to students through the class lists that teachers create in their BoomWriter accounts. Students do not need email addresses to receive the assignments. Teachers can log-in at any time to see if and when a student has completed an assignment." "WordWriter assignments offer a good way to have students practice using new vocabulary words in context. Through the assignments you can have students demonstrate their understanding a word's meaning. You could also use WordWriter assignments to assess a student's ability to use the correct form of a verb. " T/H to R. Byrnes

"When teaching students about current events I have always tried to incorporate maps so that students can make a connection to the places that they are reading about. I do this if the story is about something happening in Africa or something happening twenty miles down the road from our community. Newspaper Map and the Breaking News map are both helpful in showing students the connections between story subjects and their corresponding locations." T/H to R. Byrne

A free visual dictionary and online thesaurus. Enter a word to see related vocabulary. R Byrnes: "Snappy Words could be a good resource for students that are stuck in the rut of using the same words and phrases repeatedly in their writing. Snappy Words will give those students access to alternative words and their definitions much faster than thumbing through a thesaurus."

"Short videos from YouTube and other sources can be quite helpful in introducing topics to students and or reinforcing concepts that you have taught. Watching the video can be enough for some students, it's better if we can call students' attention to specific sections of videos while they are watching them. " R. Byrne discusses helpful tools for commenting on video. These can be great for flipped/blended classrooms as discussion starters.

R. Byrne: "Wideo is a nice tool for creating Common Craft-style videos. You can create animated videos on Wideo by dragging and dropping clipart and text in storyboard frames. You set the position and animation sequence for each element in each storyboard frame. When you have completed your storyboards Wideo generates a video for you. " Older students could, of course, create videos themselves to instruct others.

"Google added two fantastic new features to Google Slides. First, Google Slides now has a Q&A feature that lets your audience submit questions to you. Second, Google Slides now has a built-in laser pointer that you can use to call attention to parts of your slides. I've already received some questions about how to use these new features so I made the following short video." t/h R. Byrne This makes Google slides very versatile for online presentations.

The playlist also contains videos about tools like Remind, Duolingo, ClassDojo, Classtools, Photos for Class, and many other popular web services for teachers and students.
