"To help students complete research projects related to school, extra-curricular, work, and personal tasks, we have developed these series of lessons to assist you in teaching skills related to the Google search engine. These lessons are intended for students at a range of grade levels and technological expertise. "All of the lessons include Common Core standards that can be addressed through the lessons. And all of the lessons can be copied into your Google Docs account. These are some of the Common Core standards addressed in Google's search lesson plans. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words."

All About Explorers is a site that Russel Tarr tipped me off to this morning. The site, developed by Gerald Aungst and Lauren Zucker, was designed to help students develop their skills in identifying valid information found on the Internet. On All About Explorers students find fake biographies of famous explorers. The biographies do contain information that is in part based on facts, the content is intentionally written to be inaccurate. Applications for Education Teachers who want to use All About Explorers to teach their students to be discerning consumers of information should take a look at the All About Explorers lessons and treasure hunts. The treasure hunts are short activities in which students compare information from multiple sources on the web. The lesson plans are a series of five activities designed to introduce students to web research strategies discerning the quality of information found online. My only criticism of the lesson plans is that lesson four perpetuates the myth that .org domains are generally non-profit organizations and that they somehow have more credibility than .com or .net domains. (A quick glance at martinlutherking.org or dhmo.org will dispel those myths).

a free service for creating, assigning, and tracking student progress on flipped lessons built from YouTube, TeacherTube, and Vimeo videos. To create a lesson, start by identifying a topic and objective. Then search Youtube (et al) via eduCanon's site to find an appropriate video. Next, build multiple choice questions throughout the video's timeline. You may create as many lessons as you like and assign them any time.

Genetics and the passing of traits from parents to children is one of the topics in middle school  and high school science that I've often seen students take a personal interest in learning. In the following TED-Ed lesson How Mendel's Pea Plants Helped Us Understand Genetics, students receive a crash course in heredity, genotypes, and punnett squares through the story of Mendel and his study of peas. Knowmia is a free service that offers a huge library of videos and presentations for flipped lessons. The library is generated by the contributions of teachers. Users of Knowmia's free Knowmia Teach iPad app can create their own flipped lesson videos and submit them to the Knowmia library. I recently learned that you can also submit your Prezi presentations to the Knowmia library.

Into the Outdoors is a new site featuring videos and lesson plans about a wide variety of topics related to nature. The site is divided into six main topic areas; life science, farm science, social science, physical science, environmental science, and natural resources science. Each primary topic area includes a handful of sub-topics. Click on any sub-topic to find videos, lesson plans, and links to additional resources. 

The Blobz Guide to Electric Circuits is a neat series of interactive animations designed to help students of elementary and middle school age learn how electric circuits work. There are five sections to the series. Each sections builds upon the lessons of the previous section. The series starts with the basics of what makes a circuit complete and concludes with diagramming and building circuits. Each section in the series has a few short lessons and is followed by an animated interactive activity to which students can apply what they have just learned.

From Marsha Fassold At a recent conference, I saw an interesting website called SideVibe. Basically, it allows you to create a "vibe" or window for asking questions and having discussions while using websites. This could help students stay on task better and guide them in using websites for lessons. Students do not need to have an email account to use it, which is especially great for us.

Starts with the simple question: What do you want to create today? Take a look… there are MANY examples from the classroom. See what inspires you? See how you can upgrade a traditionally taught lesson or project? It is not just about the fun and tech "wow" such upgrades can bring, but about the valuable and necessary skills we are exposing our students to (at their developmentally appropriate stage). Skills they will need for THEIR future. Remember what Heidi Hayes Jacobs always says: "What year are YOU preparing your students for?"

a way to visually bookmark and share lesson plans and other educational resources. Today, Learnist released an iPad app and an iPhone app. The Learnist iPad and iPhone apps allow you to create boards, browse boards, and share your favorite resources.

Not sure why you would need a second app similar to pinterest. This is discussion to have, I think! Is there a benefit to having a duplicate universe out there strictly for education? The issue may be that students may already use some of these apps, so why not meet them where they already are rather than creating nerdier, albeit safer, ed environments that may be artificial??
