I love these virtual field trip opportunities. I always think of my grandma, who had one book with one map to teach world geography to all her students in a one room school house. We've just got no excuse not to be exciting these days. ; )

Mass Incarceration and Criminal Justice in America : The New Yorker - 2 views

  • The more professionalized and procedural a system is, the more insulated we become from its real effects on real people.

This article doesn't "fit" our theme this semester, but seems worthy of our discussion. It is long. I think it worth trying to read carefully.

These classic videos are a blast from the past! They might be slightly dated but I think students will still be amused!

This is a great resource to check out concerning how digital native students learn and some awesome ideas and examples of what is being done to incorporate technology in the classroom but also teach 'critical' thinking and 'life skills'

I thought this was an interesting article about Theordore Roosevelt's wife. After, reading this book, I wanted to learn more about this strong and caring person. I enjoyed the letters that were returned between herself and Theordore and Kermit! I think you will enjoy this article, too.

Gold mining - Bing Videos - 0 views

  •
This is a YouTube video of what it looks like in the mines and what the miners actually do. It shows the equipment used and how they move the equipment form place to place.
  •
This clip can get long and boring to watch, but I think it's interesting what the inside of mines look like and what the miners actually do. I'm wondering the hearing lose that must occur for the workers?

How Green Was My Valley - 0 views

  •
How Green Was My Valley is a story about a Welch coal mining family told through the eyes of the youngest boy.
  •
It was a pretty interesting story. Somewhat similar to our story Out of This Furnace. It was a little slow but thats kinda how old movies are. I don't think you could make a movie exciting about living in a coal mining family.

Make Everybody Hurt - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • The foundation of this unwritten constitution has to be this principle: make everybody hurt. The cuts have to be spread more or less equitably among as many groups as possible.
  • I’d invite Governor Walker and the debt fighters everywhere to think of themselves as founding fathers of austerity. They are not only balancing budgets, they are setting precedent for a process that will last decades. By their example, they have to create habits that diverse majorities can respect and embrace.

I think this is a great site to use with younger kids. It has great Sesame Street clips of Grover learning about different cultures. It is a great way to get young kids excited about other cultures around the world.
