  •
Simple activity for sorting, accompanied by an entire unit worth of lessons to use. To differentiate try to get these students with the teacher or teacher assistant and ask them questions about the objects to get their minds thinking about the objects as patterns.

How to Calculate Pi by Throwing Frozen Hot Dogs - 1 views

    • William Templeton

The math in this activity is not too challenging but it requires the students to be precise in their data collection to see good results.  It meets the goals of the CCSS for 6th grade math that students "Attend to precision" and "look for and make use of structure".  Gifted students might be interested in the information about the Buffon Needle Problem, link found in the "Tips" section.  To extend the lesson students could consider what changes could be made to the lesson to improve the accuracy of its approximation of pi.

This is a fun activity that gets students up and moving around and can show them how math is a part of the world in surprising ways.

3x3 Magic Square | Dr Mike's Math Games for Kids | Free Cool Math Games! - 1 views

    • Susan Shonle

Extensions: This connects addition with symmetry, but you could also connect this to social studies using Albrecht Durer, the artist, who used a 4x4 magic square in one of his drawings. Adaptations: This activity can be adjusted to multiple grade levels using printable worksheets or creating your own version.  Pictures can be included or dots to show a visual aid for ELL or Special Ed students.

CCS: 1.OA.3 This game has plenty of manipulatives in it to keep the kids interested. You can make it a little more difficult by using subtraction as well. I am a big fan of games that incorporates some kind of competition. I think causes more concentration.

Fun activity for fourth grade!  Kids love to think of real life solutions.  Who knows?  Maybe they COULD design a real garden for the school!  Advanced students could ponder the logistics of HOW to actually make this happen and students needing additional assistance could work in small groups or with the teacher.

How Many Peas Fill the Classroom? < Teaching Channel - 1 views

    • Lori Jones

Common core math 5.MD.4  I like that this allows students to ponder different questions, think through different ideas on how to calculate it, and in the process, learn about volume.  Students who need an extra challenge could determine how many peas would fill their homes, or how many to fill the school.  Students needing extra assistance can be paired with students who are stronger in math, and/or work with the teacher in small groups.

6.SP.1 This game is a realy good way to connect social studies and math. You could also have them do state capitals as well. Lots of options.
  •
Interesting activity! It reminds me of a Jeopardy question because it seems like they often ask for names of states that begin with a certain letter.
