Have a lot of loose buttons lying around the house? Put them to use! Leftover buttons make for great tactile math games and art projects to do with your kindergartner. Children are attracted to the bright colors and shapes of buttons, so they're perfect for teaching your child important concepts like sorting, counting, and patterning. Here are four ways to turn those loose buttons into an easy and positive learning experience. 

Ask your student, "Was your estimate close?" and "Were there more or less pieces on the spoon than you thought?" 

Seussical patterns

review basic shape terms that will be especially useful in math later on, when kids move to studying three dimensional shapes and early geometry. Great for Kinesthetic learners

Children use this Twister game as a way to learn their shapes. The children design the game board by drawing several different shapes. A spinner is made, and directions are given to the children playing. Each child puts their hand or foot on the space designated to them by the directions. 

This game will help students with strategy.

This is a spin off of the classic "Go Fish" game! Children take turns drawing cards and trying to come up with as many pairs of cards as they can that total 10. The winner is the player with the most pairs of cards.

This will get your child thinking about real workd math.

Patterning Game: Repeat and Eat! Use M&M's or other edible snacks

This has to do with probability and graphing your results.

This activity has to do with recognizing fractions.

This game has to do with multiplication and division.

Use comparative words (bigger, smaller, etc.) to complete a treasure hunt in a natural setting.

A game to practice place value and greater/less than.

An easy to learn card game that teaches speed at subtraction with numbers 10 and less.

A creative activity that requires children to draw geometric shapes.

This activity helps students learn to use a tape measure (same skill as a ruler) and teaches them about the age of trees.  It could also include work on estimation.
