Glorious Generalist: Report on "Copyright and Fair Use in the Digital Age" - 0 views

  • The first part of the program was a chance to learn the details about the Code of Best Practices for Fair Use in Academic and Research Libraries, which was published in January 2012 as a joint project of the Association of Research Libraries, Center for Social Media at American University and the Program for Information Justice and Intellectual Property at American University. The second part of the program was from Creative Commons on “Fair Use and Copyright in the Age of the Internet.” (I will probably get those notes done too at some point). I am presenting below the notes I took during the meeting, but you can follow the first presentation at the ARL site, as well as find a lot more information and the actual code at arl.org/fairuse.

Kimbel Library Instructional Videos - 1 views

    Joshua Vossler, Information Literacy/Reference Librarian at Coastal Carolina University, gave an incredibly entertaining and energetic presentation on creating instructional videos. He believes that learning is dependent on focused attention; therefore, the instructional videos we create need to be dynamic and humorous.  Joshua provided a helpful list of best practices for creating instructional videos, such as "Use anything silly or weird, such as a chicken" and "Videos should be no longer than three minutes." I highly recommend that you check out his videos here. He has certainly inspired me to brainstorm ways I can infuse more humor into my own instructional video series.

    An excellent presentation slide deck about the direction libraries could go. Slides I found most interesting / useful: the comparison of metrics on slide 6, the distribution models on slide 11, the library building example on slide 15, the "eras" of slide 17, the PDA rules on slide 28 - fascinating!, and the distribution of library space on slide 36 - raises good questions for us. The last slide ties it all together really well. This would be a great conversation starter!

With the new Next Issue digital newsstand, let's think Netflix or Pandora or Spotify as the closest cousins. Next Issue, the offspring of five prosperous parents (Time Inc., Conde Nast, Hearst, Meredith, and News Corp.), launched last night what I think will be a model-changing product for publishers.

    One way to read: Sign up once - and the new site is offering relatively generous 30-day trials - and you have but one navigation to learn. While the full content from each of the magazines is present, with added video, Next Issue says customers need only learn one way of getting around. If it's an intuitive design, that's a huge plus, as news- and feature-hungry readers find ourselves forced to learn the navigation nuances of each of our favorite apps.

COPE: Create Once, Publish Everywhere - 0 views

  • With the growing need and ability to be portable comes tremendous opportunity for content providers. But it also requires substantial changes to their thinking and their systems. It requires distribution platforms, API’s and other ways to get the content to where it needs to be. But having an API is not enough. In order for content providers to take full advantage of these new platforms, they will need to, first and foremost, embrace one simple philosophy: COPE (Create Once, Publish Everywhere).
  • COPE is really a combination of several other closely related sub-philosophies, including: Build content management systems (CMS), not web publishing tools (WPT) Separate content from display Ensure content modularity Ensure content portability
  • But to truly separate content from display, the content repository needs to also avoid storing “dirty” content. Dirty content is content that contains any presentation layer information embedded in it, including HTML, XML, character encodings, microformats, and any other markup or rich formatting information. This separation is achieved by the two other principles, content modularity and content portability

As I look at this beautiful flowchart (beautiful in function) of the NPR web publishing process, I wonder what libraries could learn from this method of information management.  This NPR process is designed to get the content out in a variety of ways, with options for the end user. How are libraries and library systems making this possible for our end users?
