Humans Have Definitely Made the California Drought Worse - 1 views

  •
This article discusses the drought in California and how people are causing the natural disaster to increase. California has increased by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. This change in air temperature helps to remove water from the soil, and allowing it to be absorbed into the air. Global warming is creating the drought in California, as well as excessive well pumping from aquifers. As the water becomes absorbed into the air, lasting effects such as crop failure and fires can result, changing the state of the physical environment. The theme of nature culture is exhibited throughout the article to display the different impacts of the drought. For example, as people burn fossil fuels and shrink aquifers by pumping water, the environment is changed by having less water for the people who inhabit the land. What can the citizens do to reduce the drought? How can water be restored back into the soil?

Northern California rattled by magnitude-6.0 earthquake; governor declares emergency - ... - 0 views

  •
Very recently an earthquake hit California with a magnitude of 6, causing much devastation and destruction. Buildings collapsed and fires started all without warning because of human's inability to predict this natural disaster. Will humans ever be able to control the environment? Or will the environment we live in always dominate us?

Northern California earthquake is area's strongest in 25 years - 0 views

  •
How have earthquakes in California molded the environmental perception within nature culture? Furthermore how has this changed how Californians act on the land?

  •
Good question, Neel. To what extent can humankind truly control nature?
  •
The plates in the California area shift due to its location over two tectonic plates (North American and Pacific). It is well known that the area is prone to such natural disasters, yet people remain as denizens to the area. Why do people continue living in an area that they know poses danger to their belongings, and potentially their lives?
  •
This catastrophic environmental event obviously affected humans in a negative way. Why do we not take into consideration the lives affected, and put more resources into research that could be used to ensure that the damage to society is less the next time a similar event occurs? As natural disasters such as this become increasingly disastrous around the world, why are steps not being taken to increase the ability to cope with the repercussions?

Great follow up questions. I wonder which countries in the world are the most proactive when it comes to their interaction with the environment.

States Ranked by Numeric Difference in the Foreign-Born Population: 1990, 2000, 2010, a... - 0 views

  •
This data sheet shows the numerical difference in the foreign born population in different states of the USA. It does not surprise me that California has the highest number of the foreign-born population because California has many job opportunities that are desirable for migrants.
  •
This makes a lot of sense, because California is a destination for many immigrants from eastern Asia, from countries like China and India.

Ten states with the largest foreign-born population from Poland, 2000 - 0 views

Mexican immigrants appear to settle in CA the most. This may due to the situation of CA and Mexico and the amount of job opportunities involving agriculture.

The chart on this page shows the top ten states with the most people who immigrated here from Honduras. 18.7% of Honduranian immigrants live in Florida, which makes sense because Florida is a coastal state that is relatively close to Honduras in comparison to other US states.
  •
UK immigrants tend to settle in California the most. This could be in part to the cultural opportunities available and the wealth of the immigrants in the UK, not to mention jobs in technological corporations based in Silicon Valley.
  •
Once again, California leads the nation in immigrants, this time from Afghanistan. People may come to California for the plentiful job opportunities and the area of access: a coastline only a few hours east of the Middle East.
  •
The largest percentage of Polish are currently in Illinois. This may be due to the presence of the polish culture that these folks are attracted to, drawing them in. The second most is in New York. This is most likely due to the fact that many Polish migrate through NY and as Ravenstein says that many people settle near their entry and the farther you leave that point the less there are (paraphrased to what he said.)

The foreign born from Asia in the West - 0 views

  •
What surprised me was that most of the foreign born from Asia are located in California and the West in general. California has many job opportunities for people, but so do other industrialized states. I wonder why the West is so appealing to immigrants from Asia?

State Proportion of the Vietnamese-Born Population in the United States - 0 views

  •
California is the state with the most Vietnamese-born residents mostly because of the major ports there (like Los Angeles) and because it is one of the closest states to Asia. Also, the climate and job opportunities could be influencing the people of Vietnam to migrate great lengths to get to the US.
  •
I agree that most Vietnamese-born residents live in California because of its proximity to Asia and its encompassment of numerous job opportunities. I find it interesting that the second area with the largest Vietnamese-born population is in Houston, Texas because I expected it to be somewhere in the Northeast due to the attraction of urban migration.

Most of the Mexican-Born population is found in California, and Texas. They are also found in Illinois, and New York. The rest is located in the western part and the southern area of the United States
    • Mr. Reidy

This makes sense. Many cities are located in these areas. Also, Texas and Calif. are situated near Mexico.
    • Veronica Werner

The majority of Mexican-born immigrants seem to be distributed near the Mexican border, as well as along the East Coast.  Large cities, especially those in the southern US, attract the most Mexican immigrants.  States with few cities and/or a significant distance from Mexico have fewer immigrants.
  •
Wow this is very unusual to me because I expected there to be more Mexican born people in Texas because it is on the border but instead there are more in California which is still a ways from Mexico.

Religious Affiliations and Percentage Practiced In the United States - 3 views

    • Bronte Lebo

      2) This map is very interesting because it shows what the majority of Americans in different reasons believe about their religion. The unique thing about this map is that it represents all religions, not just one. I looked in particular at the map of how strongly people view their religion as the one true faith. A relatively low number of people agree with this, which is probably why there aren't many huge religious conflicts in the United States. 3) For a project, I would ask students to look at this map and identify the states with the highest percentage of people who believe that their religion is the one true faith. Then I would have them research religious conflicts in these areas. We would then compare this research with data about states that had the lowest percentage of people who agreed with the statement. This would show if there is a correlation between religious conflict and the belief that a certain religion is the only right way.
    • Bronte Lebo

Elina: your observations make sense because the South East is the Bible belt, so there are probably a lot more people there who believe in God. It's interesting that Colorado is so much lower than all of the states around it too.
    • Mr. Reidy

Good observation, Bronte. Why does Colorado seem to be not as "mainstream religious" as other states?
  •
    1) This map depicts the various religions, denominations, and sects within the United States. It shows how these faiths are distributed across the nation and how dense they are in their respective locations. This map is invaluabe in describing what Americans believe and where they do so. 2)I chose this map because of how helpful and powerful it is. It does a fantastic job at being straigh forward in showing the geographer where different faiths reside. From this information, the human geographer can make powerful inferences on why things are the way they are regarding religion. 3) Using the "Religious Landscape Survey" website, the students should write a well-thought-out response answering the prompt "How are different faiths distributed across America?"

I agree with you, Liam. The map does an excellent job of showing the distribution of the different religions across the United States. The maps themselves would help others to preform your project idea. It would involve what we have learned in the past about migration, but would also tie in what we have learned about religion so far.
  •
1.) The map on this webpage displays the distribution of certain religions within the US. For example, it shows that Protestantism and Catholicism are the two most dominant religions within the US. 2.) I chose this part of the survey because it provided me with a visual aid of the distribution of religions within the US. Also, it shows the distribution of specific religions within certain states. 3.) Create a visual representation of the distribution of a religion of your choice within the US, and provide some insight learned from this unit (and others) in order to explain the cause of the religion's distribution.
  •
Liam, I agree that the map has power in the way it displays the distribution of different faiths. The visual representation is helpful in understanding a religion's distribution.
  •

This map portrays the percentage of each state in which citizens answer whether religion is "very important" in their life or not. 2. Not only can we learn the number of citizens who truly value their religion in either a widespread or specific area, but also come to some conclusions on what possible dominant religion that area is ruled by. For example, the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana all have very high percentage rates in which the citizens say their religion is very important in their life. From prior knowledge we know this is around the "Bible Belt" area, and can assume that these states are predominately Protestant. In state such as California and Nevada, the percentage rates of the citizens who feel that religion is important to their life is relatively low. Especially on the West Coast, religion isn't well known. 3. A project I feel that would be beneficial and "real world" like would be to survey students at our own High School, asking the same question; whether religion is "very important" in their life. Of course you can't force students to take the survey, but it would be interesting to examine the results gathered from responses of fellow classmates.
  •
Nathan V- I really like the creativity of your project. There are definitely a few important correlations between amount of attendance at services and the predominant religion in the area. Great connection.
  •
    1. This map shows all the religions practiced in the United States and exactly what percentage of people practice each religion. You can also click a link that shows us how many people actively practice their religion. 2. I chose this because it is interesting to see exactly what religions are being practiced and if people are actually practicing their religion. 3. I think an interesting project idea would be to first, take a survey of the people in your neighborhood of what religion they practice. Secondly, take a survey of how many actively practice their religion. Then look up the same statistics for 2000 and compare the results to see how it has changed. After make a presentation/power point showing these results seeing whether more people practice their religions or not now a days as opposed to 13 years ago.
  •
Brendan- I love your project idea. I think it would be more beneficial than just writing or creating a visual representation because it would be more like you're doing real field work and it would be more real life than writing about the map.

State Proportion of the Cuban-Born in the United States - 0 views

  •
The reason why so many Cubans are located in Florida and especially in Miami is because it is only a short distance between Cuba and Florida, allowing for easy access. The other areas are major cities and metropolitan areas that will provide many job opportunities.
  •
I think that you are right in the fact that many of the immigrants would be going toward the cities in search of different jobs. They would probably want to get a higher paying job so maybe send money to family back home.
  •
Most native Cubans that live in America are found in similar latitudes and climates as Cuba itself. Most live in states that are farther south, like Florida, Texas, Nevada, and California. The exceptions are New Jersey and New York, where many immigrants come through, and there are many jobs. This suggests that immigrants often try to live in a climate that may be similar to the one that they are used to.

Indian Immigrants in the United States - 1 views

  •
Indian immigrants that reside in the US make up the third largest immigrant group in the nation. This is most likely because of the freedoms that Americans have that Indians don't usually have, plus the protection and job opportunities are equally attractive to migrants.
  •
I'm not surprised that there are so many Indian immigrants. The crisis at hand in India is the unstable rise in population. With this issue, many citizens are probably looking to leave the country if they have the chance.
  •
It does seem that there is a rising Indian influence in the United States... I imagine they migrate primarily to large cities and/or states like California, a state with plentiful, arable land. This would make sense, as these conditions precipitate ample job opportunities. This is key, as the exploding population in India induces growing job scarcity, as Brendan touched on.

The foreign born from Africa by county in the United States, 2000 - 0 views

  •
There aren't many foreign born Africans residing in the United States. The ones that do live in the United States live in either New York City, Washington D.C., or Southern California. I believe this happens because those areas are major cities in the US.
  •
Also when Africans migrate to the States, they may look for a lifestyle change in the city which may not be as common in Africa, just another though......

Foreign born in the US - 1 views

  •
This map makes sense because the most foreign born Mexicans are near the border. The most people are located right on the border between Texas and Mexico. There are also many people located up around California and farther in the interior of Texas. Once again this make sense because as immigrants come into the United States they will move farther into the state they entered in. I also noticed that there are many immigrants situated in Florida because this is a similar climate which makes the move less hard. Also there are jobs available.

Uncertainty for same-sex couples who can't marry at home - CNN.com - 5 views

  • Any way you slice it, thousands of same-sex couples across the United States were thrilled by Wednesday's Supreme Court rulings. But in 37 states, some same-sex couples weren't as happy as they'd hoped to be. They're the 37 states that ban same-sex marriage
  • A couple that was lawfully married in a state, but moves to another state, still is married," he said. "Their marriage has not been ended, even if not recognized in their new state. So they get all federal benefits accorded to married couples, though their marriage will not be recognized in their new state
  • To my LGBT brethren in more accepting states, especially you who got a double in California...rejoice and be happy, for this day is truly yours," wrote R.J. McKay, an Ohio resident who's been with his partner for 15 years. "For those of us stuck in less accepting states, this was a huge symbolic win...keep (your) eye on the prize.
  •
Areas of high religiosity, generally will not accept gay marriage which creates controversy in state governments. Why don't states legalize same sex marriage even if some people say it isn't right even when the pope himself supports the proposition? In my opinion it is an American citizen's right to be able to marry whomever he or she pleases.

I don't understand why people today are still against the movement. It is the 21 century, times are changing, and people should, too.
  •
If the Supreme Court ruled it legal then why are these other states still against it. Even if some states are very religious, it shouldn't be that big of a deal since, as Alec said, the pope supports it.
