Over thirty whales in Alaska have died in less than four months. This mortality rate is very unusual. Canada has also announced they have experienced unusual whale deaths. The cause is unknown, but many samples are being tested. Biotoxins may be playing a role in these deaths. There is a major algae bloom from Washington to the center of California that NOAA feels could be responsible for the biotoxins. Alaskan waters could be impacted. This ties into the theme of nature culture because the physical environment shapes the culture. With all of these whales dying it will have an impact on the waters nearby which will in return have an effect on the people. What will happen if the whales continue to die? How will the ecosystem react?
