Kids' Games, Animals, Photos, Stories, and More -- National Geographic Kids - 1 views

Online version of the magazine. I
  •
I like to use photos with various guidance and counseling lessons. This site has some great animal pictures. I had a subscription for the magazine at one time and like it. The benefit for me now is the photos are easily accessible and I can choose which ones would work best at a particular time.

Tons of links to technology resources.
  •
WOW, there are so many links on this page. This resource would be helpful for anyone who is interested in using technology in their classroom. I was most interested in the fact that some of the sites were already ear-marked for use with smart boards. Some of the sites were practice sites for kids to use at home. I will be adding those to my parent wiki once school starts.
  •
I am also very happy to see all the activities involving smart boards. Our district is purchasing them for many of our classrooms and I will share this resource with staff next month!

Poetry creation tool that allows anyone to fill in the blanks and produce a poem in a variety of different forms. This reminds me of the MadLib format that kids love and I would use it with elementary students as we study different forms of poetry.

This tool allows your images to "talk" in that you upload pictures, choose where you want to place a mouth and then choose your audio (phone, microphone, etc). Easy to use with laptop microphone. Great for word study, kids that need audio with text. Fun!

This is a technology way to study languages, vocabulary, or almost anything. I use this in my classes to make up flash cards and study games that kids can log on to and do. Helps them study for quizzes and tests.

The Kindles Are Coming: Ereaders and tablets are springing up in schools-and librarians... - 0 views

  • “That’s the most exciting part for me, seeing kids excited about reading,” says Hamilton, who launched her program in November 2010 after learning about librarian Kathy Parker’s Kindle project at Seneca (IL) Grade School. “If we can spark or enhance that existing passion, that’s really what this is all about. It gives us another way to fuel the love of reading, while creating another way to learn and have fun. And that’s well worth the investment.”

This is an interesting way to look at e-readers. We as librarians should always be looking for ways to encourage reading. The question becomes how difficult it might be to fund such a project. Several of my students have e-readers, but since they are all different it is hard to buy books that fit all formats. This is definitely a trend teacher librarians need to keep an eye on.

This article discusses school libraries who are getting grants or finding other ways of purchasing e-readers.

WatchKnow - Free Educational Videos for K-12 Students - 1 views

  • We believe that everyone should have the same opportunity to learn. The best way to make this possible, we believe, is to organize into one, super directory the hundreds of thousands of good videos currently available on the Internet. To make this a reality, we invite teachers, instructors and educators to suggest videos for inclusion into our directory, and then to review, approve, and assign those videos into appropriate categories using a wiki framework and philosophy. The videos are the highest quality found on the World Wide Web, cover all major educational topics from elementary to secondary schools (or age range 1 – 18), and are Kid Safe!

This is a great site that provides videos for educators to use in their classrooms. It's organized in a wiki framework so that all types of educators can collaborate in order to provide great tools for students. I encourage my teachers to search for videos they can use in their classroom as well as to share videos they have created.
  •
This web site helps teachers and students find valuable, educational videos from You Tube, Teacher Tube, and other places online. There is an advisory committee that chooses which videos are appropriate for the site and each video is tagged with an age appropriate label. You can search by subject area or a keyword search.

Math Help for Parents And Their Kids - 1 views

  •
This website provides tutorials for students, parents, and teachers to teach math skills. They could be very beneficial for teachers as an enrichment opportunity for students who lack basic skills. They could also assist parents with homework completion and retaining math skills over the summer time.

School Counselor Blog - 1 views

  • "It's What's on the Inside That Counts!"
  • I am currently running a group for children with a loved one in jail. One of the activities I have facilitated with my group is the kiwi lesson.  The kiwi lesson can be used to address many different topics including stigma, shame, diversity, tolerance, body image, and more.  This lesson is fun and engaging. It worked especially well in the context of this group.

Great lesson to use with a small group. Author uses for kids with parent in jail.
  •
I am always looking for ways to engage my students about guidance topics. I am looking for "real" conversation with them as opposed to hearing the answers they think you want to hear. The kiwi lesson described is one of those lessons that will provoke responses that are real.
