UNSW Library Throwing Away 'Extremely Good Books' - 0 views

  • Academics say complete journal collections, valuable books and newspapers dating to the 19th century are being thrown out to clear space for cafe-style lounges.

This is interesting because the article is not saying the books are outdated or there is a lack of space, but instead the library is making the choice to create more of a coffee shop feel. I wonder if other university libraries will follow suit? If so, is this a matter of giving the patrons what they want or making it okay to ignore valuable books?

This article discusses a university who is choosing to discard books so that they can create more seating for a coffee shop style atmosphere. Is this the future of university libraries?

Prezi - The Zooming Presentation Editor - 0 views

This presentation tool is very interesting. It certainly is different from the standard powerpoint. I find the movement from one slide to another to be very engaging. I viewed a presentation that a teacher used to introduce herself to her class. I could see using this with my 2nd grade class as a way to introduce myself or to tell them about my 10 favorite books.

The Newspaper Clipping Image Generator - Create your own fun newspaper - 0 views

This would be a fun resource for students for something like writing an article or book summary. They can write a very succinct "newspaper" article, save the resulting image, and then students can read summaries written by classmates.

Guys Read - 0 views

  •
This is a site designed to help boys/guys find something to read. We have an abnormally high number of boys compared to girls at our school, and not all of them love reading. This site is a great way to steer them towards something they might like. Most of the contributors are male authors, and they serve as great examples for my students of guys who like to read and write.

The Kindles Are Coming: Ereaders and tablets are springing up in schools-and librarians... - 0 views

  • “That’s the most exciting part for me, seeing kids excited about reading,” says Hamilton, who launched her program in November 2010 after learning about librarian Kathy Parker’s Kindle project at Seneca (IL) Grade School. “If we can spark or enhance that existing passion, that’s really what this is all about. It gives us another way to fuel the love of reading, while creating another way to learn and have fun. And that’s well worth the investment.”

This is an interesting way to look at e-readers. We as librarians should always be looking for ways to encourage reading. The question becomes how difficult it might be to fund such a project. Several of my students have e-readers, but since they are all different it is hard to buy books that fit all formats. This is definitely a trend teacher librarians need to keep an eye on.

Tons of links to technology resources.
  •
WOW, there are so many links on this page. This resource would be helpful for anyone who is interested in using technology in their classroom. I was most interested in the fact that some of the sites were already ear-marked for use with smart boards. Some of the sites were practice sites for kids to use at home. I will be adding those to my parent wiki once school starts.
  •
I am also very happy to see all the activities involving smart boards. Our district is purchasing them for many of our classrooms and I will share this resource with staff next month!
