The 10 warmest years: Not exactly forever ago - 1 views

  •
Last week NASA and NOAA announced that 2014 topped the list of hottest years ever recorded. Yikes! What's worse, the ten warmest years ever recorded have all occurred since 1998. Yikes again! In the meantime, the ACT is skiing on stones and rocks in Switzerland ^^

Scientific method: Defend the integrity of physics - 2 views

  •
Interesting article about theoretical physics theories vs. experimental verification. Can we state that a theory can be so good that its existence supplants the need for data and testing ? If a theory is proved to be untestable experimentally, can we still say that it is a scientific theory ? (not in my opinion)

Mars Spacecraft Reveal Comet Flyby Effects on Martian Atmosphere - 1 views

  •
NASA and ESA spacecraft have gathered new information about the basic properties of the comet's nucleus (not 67p) and directly detected the effects on the Martian atmosphere. Dust from the comet impacted Mars and was vaporized high in the atmosphere, producing what was likely an impressive meteor shower. Eight different types of metal ions have been detected, including sodium, magnesium and iron. The satellites will now continue to look for long-term perturbations to Mars' atmosphere.

Brain decoder can eavesdrop on your inner voice - 4 views

  •
"As you read this, your neurons are firing - that brain activity can now be decoded to reveal the silent words in your head TALKING to yourself used to be a strictly private pastime. That's no longer the case - researchers have eavesdropped on our internal monologue for the first time. The achievement is a step towards helping people who cannot physically speak communicate with the outside world." Or alternatively, a step towards snooping into individuals' privacy.

A nice article explaining the principle of quantum superposition from the double slits experience. Nothing new here but still interesting to read :)

A Drone That Finds Survivors Through Their Phones - 0 views

  •
This is the interesting master project of a good friend from my university, not really related to space though. Replacing the drone's wifi antenna by an Avalanche Victim Detector, it could be a very promising tool to deploy the first avalanche searches.

Small cube robots that self-assemble - 3 views

  •
Using the angular momentum transmitted by an internal flywheel as an impulse, these cubes can move, jump, roll across the ground and climb over and around one another. They stick together using a set of small magnets, smart !

Can You Slow Down a Day Using Angular Momentum? - 4 views

  •
"Could you do this? Could a spinning human slow down the Earth? Theoretically, yes." Let's all put our ice skates on and spin to enjoy a longer daytime !
