The Amazing Trajectories of Life-Bearing Meteorites from Earth - Technology Review - 0 views

  • That raises another interesting question: how quickly could life-bearing ejecta from Earth (or anywhere else) seed the entire galaxy? Hara and co calculate that it would take some 10^12 years for ejecta to spread through a volume of space the size of the Milky Way. But since our galaxy is only 10^10 years old, a single ejection event could not have done the trick. However, they say that if life evolved at 25 different sites in the galaxy 10^10 years ago, then the combined ejecta from these places would now fill the Milky Way.

Our approach to replication in computational science - 2 views

  • So what did we do to make this paper extra super replicable? If you go to the paper Web site, you'll find:
  • p.s. I think I have to refer to this cancer results not reproducible paper somewhere. Done.

good discussion on the replicability/reproducibility of scientific results (also a nice example of how to do it right... in bioinformatics at least)

Meet CERN's New Artist in Residence, Julius von Bismarck - 3 views

  •
Julius von Bismarck is only 28 years old, but his artistic resume is already several pages long. He's currently taking time off from school to be the new artist in residence at CERN ? the world's biggest particle physics research facility, home of the Large Hadron Collider.

Perhaps a new role for the ACT!?

very good idea - one that already Andrés had way back and a few years ago I was in contact with a group in Amsterdam who was interested but it never materialised ... any good recommendations? this Bismark guy seems to be a nice chap to have around in the office according to the photo on the site: long beard, a bottle of wine in the office and steering out of the window in search for ideas ... give the ugly office he might even want to swap it with our nice semi open space! :-)

Can we automatically gauge the quality of a research paper just by means of visual appe... - 2 views

  •
We discussed a few times about whether it is possible to determine the quality of a paper by extracting visual features from the paper and then learning a mapping to a measure of quality such as the number of citations etc. This paper circulated at CVPR 2010, and does exactly that, mapping visual features to estimate whether it has been accepted for the main conference or the workshops.

"Real leadership is about transforming the system, not just succeeding within or despite the system. Today, we know how to run organizations in ways that that lift up the human spirit, both for those doing the work and those for whom the work is done. So why don't we get on with it?"

"We're sorry but this site is not accessible from the UK as it is part of our international service and is not funded by the licence fee. It is run commercially by BBC Worldwide, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BBC, the profits made from it go back to BBC programme-makers to help fund great new BBC programmes. You can find out more about BBC Worldwide and its digital activities at www.bbcworldwide.com." In other words, UK is not part of the world...
