Legislators had already worked out a deal with the White House on the future of the manned space program, and they included funding for an additional shuttle flight in 2011. They even added $35 million to the $20 million increase that the president requested for NASA's education programs, boosting them by a whopping 30% to $180 million. "

Even after reading this sentence: "NASA wants to put a photograph of your face on one of the remaining space shuttle missions and launch it into orbit." it's not clear to me what exactly they plan to do... anyone?

Wow, they even mentioned it in the news on the Polish radio yesterday... What I am curious is if they really take the physical (or at least digital) photo and name to the orbit, or is this just, as you called it, "symbolic" ...

It is usually for real. Sometimes it is on a plate or slab, sometimes on a DVD, ... I will have my name on STS-134 :-)

...and hitting the news in the same day: A Rocket Built from U.S. and European Parts "A new rocket that would combine parts from NASA's canceled Ares I rocket as well as the Ariane 5 , a well-proven European satellite launcher, could provide a low-cost option for taking crew and cargo to the space station. The rocket proposal was announced this week by ATK, an aerospace and defense company that manufactures the solid rocket motors for NASA's space shuttles, and Astrium, the European company that makes the Ariane 5. They say the rocket, called Liberty, would be ready for flight by 2015." "Other commercial companies, including Boeing and Orbital Sciences Corporation, are looking to use low-end versions of the Atlas V to carry the capsules they are building. Liberty could carry any capsule at a cost less than that of the Atlas V, according to ATK." Look! Competition! :)

The SpaceX Falcon 9 explosion was caused by a failed strut that allowed a helium bottle to burst free inside the rocket's liquid oxygen tank, CEO Elon Musk said Monday. "One of those struts broke free during flight," Musk told reporters on a conference call to discuss the June 28 blast on what was supposed to be a routine cargo mission to the International Space Station.

I guess this is how it starts as they mentioned they will inspect struts individually before each flight. Also for the space shuttle they believed a rapid inspection between launches would be feasible, but in the end there was a need for individual assessment almost. And we haven't even considered human spaceflight yet.

as predicted, first failure, first inquiry board, first new safety procedures ... and certainly many more will follow and all will make sense but with the risk of loosing the competitive edge

An alien star passed through our Solar System just 70,000 years ago, astronomers have discovered. No other star is known to have approached this close to us. An international team of researchers says it came five times closer than our current nearest neighbour - Proxima Centauri. Passing straight through the Oort Cloud region. This must have left some sort of mark maybe? A binary system of a red and brown dwarf (8% and 6% solar masses) so maybe not a too significant impact on trajectories in the Oort cloud?

I read this earlier and thought it might be another one of those alien conspiracy stuff. Freaky stuff.

what about taking a ride on one of these? - especially if they come with some companion planets? when is the next shuttle coming?

Cool. Since ESA is always said to be inspired by NASA projects, can the ACT look at it from a different perpective? What about sending humans to the ISS without legs? Think of the mass and volume it would save. It would also improve robot-human interaction. Robots would no longer feel inferior. I'm sure most people would give up limb to go to space.

I found these are huge numbers, as if it is the taskforce necessary for building the shuttle from scratch ... but it is supposedly reusable!
