The new Google service, announced last week, is similar in many ways to Facebook. It provides a way to share updates, photos, and recommendations with friends and colleagues. One key difference is that Google Plus makes it easier to share information with isolated subgroups of contacts, rather than sending all updates to every online "friend."

Google facelifts and new features as of 7/7/11

Yesterday, Apple released an update for iWork on iOS that added, among changes to Numbers and Keynote, support for change tracking in Pages.

Nature Publishing will announce a new biology textbook on Tuesday, and the textbook will have a digital only edition. The $49 digital textbook will include lifetime access to regularly update content that can be access online, from a tablet, and it can even be printed. 

This Statement of Best Practices identifies what media scholars consider to be fair use of copyrighted works within media studies publishing in the United States. It provides a reference for media scholars to follow when considering whether or not their inclusion of media in a publication meets the standards of fair use. In 1993, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (then the Society for Cinema Studies) issued a similar statement making the fair use argument for the scholarly use of film stills in publications.1 This document updates the 1993 statement to account for changes in media publishing and in copyright fair use analysis.

As ambitious as we are as students, we're not always guaranteed good grades or perfect scores despite long nights and exam crams. Social media technologies and their ease of use make them attractive channels of communication. However, these tools also can open the possibility of unintended consequences. To enhance the effective use of these technologies, these guidelines draw upon examples of best practices from various institutions to outline the most appropriate use of social media. Due to the rapid changes in technology, this guideline may be reviewed and updated as needed.
