    The effect of tides on the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is explored in a regional ocean model of South East Asia. Our model simulations, with and without tidal forcing, reveal that tides drive only a modest increase in the ITF volume, heat and salt transports toward the Indian Ocean. However, tides drive large regional changes in these transports through Lombok Strait, Ombai Strait and the Timor Sea, and regulate the partitioning of the ITF amongst them. The effect of tidal mixing on the salinity and temperature profiles within the Indonesian Seas drives a small decrease in the heat and salt transports toward the Indian Ocean in all three exit passages. In contrast, the tidal residual circulation due to the interaction between the tides and the topography and stratification (including the effects of tidal mixing on the circulation) leads to a large decrease in the transports toward the Indian Ocean through the Lombok and Ombai straits, but a large increase through the Timor Sea. Hence, the small net contribution from tides to the ITF's volume, heat and salt transports is due to a compensation between large, but opposing tidal residual transports at the combined Lombok and Ombai straits and in the Timor Sea. Our results indicate that explicit representation of tides, often missing in Earth system models, is necessary to accurately capture the ITF's pathway and so the tracer transport from the Pacific into the Indian Ocean.

Policy gaps in the East African Blue economy: Perspectives of small-scale fishers on po... - 0 views

    Recently, the rights of small-scale fishers have increasingly been acknowledged in ocean governance because coastal development and various maritime activities have reduced traditional fishing grounds. More specifically, small-scale fisheries (SSF) are increasingly being threatened by ocean grabbing, pollution, and a lack of inclusiveness in decision-making processes. Although there are guidelines to resolve and reduce conflict, formal avenues to include fisher concerns, particularly in the context of ocean development and governance, remain a difficult task. Moreover, there is insufficient information on how fishers are impacted by coastal and marine development and how their concerns are included in the decision-making process. Hence, this study contributes to the SSF discourse by understanding and describing the characteristics and concerns of small-scale fishers from two coastal towns in East Africa with different levels of port development. Using data from perception surveys, focus group discussions, and participatory mapping, we discuss how fishers were involved in the decision-making processes to develop ports in Lamu, Kenya, and Bagamoyo, Tanzania. We found that fishers rely on nearshore ecosystems such as mangroves and coral reefs because of their accessibility since most fishers only use low-powered boats for fishing. Moreover, we found that the fishers' livelihoods were severely affected by port development and that they were excluded from the decision-making process concerning the port's construction and fishers' compensations. While some fishers believe that new ports in the region can increase their livelihoods by creating new markets and jobs, this is unlikely to happen since most fishers are not qualified to work in formal port-related jobs.     Recent studies suggest that pelagic sediments can enrich rare-earth elements (REE) acting as a significant reservoir for the global REE budget as well as a potential resource for future exploitation. Although Ca-phosphate (e.g., bioapatite fossils) and Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides (e.g., micronodule) have been considered important REE carriers in deep-sea sediments, the proportion of REE held by each mineral phase remains enigmatic. Here, we have investigated the sediments from two promising REE-rich prospective areas: the Tiki Basin in the Southeast Pacific (TKB) and the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). The mineral grains including bioapatite fossils and Fe-Mn micronodules have been inspected individually by in-situ microscale analytical methods. Correspondently, the REE bound to Ca-phosphate and Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides have been sequentially extracted and quantified. The crucial role of Ca-phosphate is substantiated by sequential leaching which reveals its dominance in hosting ~69.3-89.4% of total REE. The Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides carry ~8.2% to 22.0% of REE in bulk sediments, but they account for ~70.0-80.5% of Ce owing to their preferential adsorption of Ce over the other REE. Surface sediment on modern seafloor can accumulate high REE contents resulting from the REE scavenging by the host phases within the range of sediment-seawater interface. Differences between TKB and CIOB samples indicate that the REE enrichment in the deep-sea environment may be controlled by multiple factors including the productivity of overlying seawater (e.g., phosphorus flux), water depth relative to carbonate compensation depth (CCD), sedimentation rate, redox condition, and hydrothermal vent input (e.g., Fe-Mn precipitations).
