Avaaz.org - Wikileaks: Stop the crackdown - 0 views

  •
The vicious intimidation campaign against WikiLeaks is wrong, dangerous and undermines the rule of law. Top US politicians have branded WikiLeaks a terrorist organization, suggested assassinating its staff, and urged corporations to shut it down. The future of our freedoms and the Internet is at stake. Let's urgently take a stand to ensure governments and companies act with restraint and due process, not escalate this fight. Sign the petition to stop the crackdown -- we can reach 1 million voices this week!

In this paper, we describe our findings from interviews with participants working in two relatively new consortia in the government sector: the Government Open Code Collaborative or GOCC, and the Open Source Software Institute or OSSI. For each case we consider six major questions: (1) How and why did these collaborative efforts begin? (2) What are their motivations? (3) How are these collaborative efforts governed? (4) What communication and collaborative infrastructure do they utilize? (5) What software do they focus on? and, (6) What is their current status? Our findings suggest that incentives, membership structures, stable paid staff, concentrated focus and attention to the creation and delivery of "value" to participating organizations are important factors leading to successful open source consortia.

  •
Since both the blogosphere and the traditional media is abuzz today with the news about a cyberattack against Georgian official websites presumably organized by Russia (and I have already claimed that I believe the Russian hackers really did not need any special request to get started with the DDoS attack), I thought I'd mention another aspect of the situation that is remotely related to this one and proves my point again

Creating Component Communication Pipelines with YUI (Decoupling) » Yahoo! Use... - 0 views

  •
Creating complex web applications demands organization and modularization. Modularization introduces a new problem - the comunication pipes between components. This is a serious challenge for developers, as more components and widgets mean more pipelines and more dependencies. In this article, we'll look at a technique to mitigate these issues: Creating an abstraction layer to moderate the comunication between the components and widgets in a web application. This technique is based on YUI and makes use of my Bubbling Library, which is a BSD-licensed superset of functionality that builds on top of the YUI foundation.

There's a whole new generation of online tools available - tools that make it easier than ever before to collaborate, share information and mobilize support. These tools include blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, podcasting, and more. Some people describe them as "Web 2.0"; we call them the social web, because their power comes from the relationships they enable.
