This is the first thing everyone should look for. I can give you a list of 100s of hosting providers who claim (and not guarantee) 99.9% uptime. On the front page the write "assured 99.9% uptime" but if you read TOS, they don't guarantee it, and there lies the catch. Fore my detailed review, I monitored each of the service using online uptime monitoring service Monitor: HostTracker, averaged over 4-6 months. BlueHost: They used to be great until last year, when they didn't have enough customers, all squeezed into the same servers. If you look into their reviews till last year, they look awesome. Reason is clear, they were good at that time, they were not that greedy. Due to the greed that they have been possessing over last year,  they suck on quality. Practically, I have attained practical uptime of 97.21% (This means 15 hours downtime monthly) and if you get frequent account suspensions (discussed later) downtime increases further. DreamHost: They seem to follow a similar trend with BlueHost, continue to fall in quality. The uptime I was able to attain  was 98.59% HostGator: Like others, they are also getting bigger, squeezing more people but still they seem to have quality as they are the ONLY Web hosting providers that ACTUALLY GUARANTEE 99.9% uptime. Woohoo, this forced me to try their service. And trust me, I actually achieved a figure very close to it. My averaged score over 6 months was 99.84 %. This is brilliant. (during October, I even got 99.99%)

SmartGWT is easy to setup and I simply can't understand why they don't add a few lines into their Getting Started page. Yesterday I found obsolete SmartGWT setup tutorial - but it still works with only one thing missing. As someone mentioned in comments there, you need to add following code into your HTML (before script with your GWT module): Besides this you only need one inherit in your GWT Module XML: And of course - add smartgwt.jar on your classpath for GWT compiler. That's it - now you know how to setup SmartGWT project. (Of course I omitted the coding part, but there is a Showcase with examples.) That's the missing Getting Started. A few lines instead of many links mostly for Eclipse users - with some links not even related to SmartGWT at all.

The Dalai Lama joined Twitter this weekend, or so it seemed. At least, the Office of His Holiness The Dalai Lama was apparently making use of the messaging service under the username @ohhdl. Or was it?The account was promoting the official Dalai Lama website, and responding respectfully to inquiries. The story spread rapidly on blogs and - of course - on Twitter. At its peak, the account surpassed 16,000 followers.

Google's plans to extend its AdWords platform to traditional media appears to be going up in smoke as the economy falters. The company has announced that it's discontinuing its radio advertising program, a business it got into back in 2006 with the acquisition of dMarc Broadcasting. The news follows word that Google would be pulling out of print advertising as well, which was announced less than a month ago.

From the creators of TwitterCounter - the popular chiclet that displays your Twitter follower count (see our sidebar) - comes TwitterRemote, a very simple widget that functions much like MyBlogLog, except it shows you recent visitors to your site that are also Twitter users.

Due to browsers' prohibition on cross domain XMLHTTP calls, all AJAX websites must have a server side proxy to fetch content from external domains like Flickr or Digg. From the client-side JavaScript code, an XMLHTTP call goes to the server-side proxy hosted on the same domain, and then the proxy downloads the content from the external server and sends back to the browser. In general, all AJAX websites on the Internet that are showing content from external domains are following this proxy approach, except for some rare ones who are using JSONP. Such a proxy gets a very large number of hits when a lot of components on the website are downloading content from external domains. So, it becomes a scalability issue when the proxy starts getting millions of hits. Moreover, a web page's overall load performance largely depends on the performance of the proxy as it delivers content to the page. In this article, we will take a look at how we can take a conventional AJAX Proxy and make it faster, asynchronous, continuously stream content, and thus make it more scalable.
