A satirical critique on the news coverage of Miley Cyrus's performance.  It's more about using pop culture as revenue than the actual performance.

Following the recent spate of controversy over the sexualisation of artists in today's pop culture. Singer Annie Lennox has criticized not the artists but how musics ''market forces don't give a toss about the notion of boundaries''. However Lennox agrees with freedom of speech and expression, but it is effectively depressing to see and all the sexualised performances as just a glorified and monetized form of self harm.

An argument that Miley Cryus's VMA performance was (though unintentionally) a minstrel show that echoes the minstrelsy of the 19th century, especially performances of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." This is a heritage that we carry with us from theatre, and plays out in hollywood, such as "Orange Is the New Black" character Crazy Eyes.

This post includes a file with all 150 of the complaints sent by viewers of MTV's VMAs about Miley Cryus's performance. These complaints focused on the sexuality of the performance and often express being "traumatized." Unfortunately for the complainers, the FCC does not fine or regulate cable television like it does broadcast television.

I thought this was especially interesting, since we had been talking in class about the similarities between Lady Gaga's performances and Miley Cyrus's at the VMAs.

I posted this article in response to the articles about Miley Cyrus smoking weed on stage. This is Lady Gaga doing the same thing and like Cyrus she is also in Amsterdam. I don't understand what the fuss is about it's legal in the Netherlands so really why bother? These artist never smoke tobacco or drink alcohol on stage and these are legal substances in most places, plus they would impare their performances which fans pay money to see. I would be so annoyed that I payed money to watch an artsist get high on stage and then perform not because its predominately an illegal substance but surely they want to be at their best and their fans want to see them at their best.

I agree that people may have gone overboard with miley when you compare her to gaga because she has done the exact same thing. I think the reason for this is because people still have this goody-goody, disney image of miley and cannot still tear themselves away to look at her in this new light. Also Gaga never started out the same way as miley so i don't think people really care if she smoked weed or had a drink on stage, therefore i think origins play a big role for the perceptions of people in relation to artists such as miley and gaga.

The Guardian asked in 2010 if Lady Gaga is "a feminist icon." Kira Cochrane's column answers in the affirmative, noting how Gaga reveals the "sham" of performed femininity, while Hadley Freeman responds briefly that Gaga is nothing more than a copycat.

Article about Gaga's performance of her new song along with a video of her performing it at the YouTube Music Awards. I found Gaga's promotion of her new album very interesting as every stage seems to have been carefully constructed and planned as to get the most amount of exposure.

Holy cow, Lady Gaga is a wreck in this video. Don't get me wrong; I love Gaga, and I think she's insanely talented. Her emotions are completely reflected in her voice, though, and it was totally affecting her pitch. I wonder what that was all about.

The style of this song and the way she sung it reminded me a lot of Lana Del Ray's style! Very interesting and quite beautiful.

In light of the Sia incident, I here is Elton John, who identifies as gay, performing with Eminem at the Grammys.

This can relate to the class discussion on Lady Gaga's 'Telephone' music video and how there is this reversal of the black/white dynamic. This article continues to discuss how Gaga isn't oblivious to her own normativity and how she deliberately plays with her 'whiteness' but in actuality she is then oblivious to to white privilege. Thus the protagonist and in this case Gaga gets the attention while women of colour (beyonce) that are contributing to the redefinition of music and gender performances are marginalised.
