Web. 2 Nov. 2010. Sports and literacy are connected in this article, which talks about literacy in the sporting world and its importance. It mentions literacy in regards to working as an athletic trainer and effectively communicating with athletes. It shows that literacy is essential in the sporting world. Involvement in athletic training should come with great physical literacy skills.

This book is about different methods people are using to make the classroom more technologically advanced. Some people agree with the fact that the classroom setting should be more technologically advanced in order to keep up with the technological advances being made. However, there are some people that disagree with this and are against the idea of advancements of techonology being made in the classroom. It shows people's opinions on what is working and what is not.

Besnoy, Kevin D. and Lane W. Clarke. "Connecting the Old to the New: What Technology-Crazed Adolescents Tell Us About Teaching Content Area Literacy." Journal of Media Literacy Education 2.1 (2010): 47-56. EBSCO. Web. 22 Nov. 2010. Described is a study where a class of 8th graders received PDAs. The study was to see how the incorporation of technology affected to students academic performance. The mix of books and technology was to see which way of teaching is more efficient. Since kids grew up with technology it was an easy transition for them to use the PDAs.

This article acknowledges the growing prevalence of instant messaging and text messaging in today's society. It reveals the two different beliefs of how these new forms of communication affect writing. One belief is that it has caused a "breakdown of the English language" from the use of abbreviations and lack of punctuation. The second is that students have been encouraged to write more and that it is helping them practice their literacy skills. These technologies can be used as learning tools, but the problem is that students have a hard time distinguishing when to use informal and when to use formal writing. The challenge now is how to teach children how to use this new tool for literacy.

Hartz, Deborah. "Literacy Leaps as Blind Students Embrace Technology." The English Journal 90.2 (2000): 52-59. JSTOR. Web. 16 Nov. 2010. Deborah Hartz is a teacher, who has taught high school English at The Arizona School for the Blind in Tuscan. Hartz uses a variety of technologies to help teach her students how to read. She gives detailed descriptions on the various types of machines and tells the usefulness of each machine. Some of the technology used in the class room include Braille n' Speak, Zoom Text Extra enlargement and speaking dictionaries. Hartz gives suggestions as to classroom design, and having a library in the classroom that also aid in teaching students who are visually impaired. Hartz explains how important technology is when teaching blind students because it motivates them to want to learn to read, edit and write. She says that the invention of more technology has made it easier for people with visual impairments to access Braille books and has made Braille even more popular among students.

The effects technology has on younger kids is described in this article. Research was conducted to determine if younger kids were impacted and exactly how they were impacted. The outcome was to find out how technology effected academic achievement in the designated age groups. I will use this information in putting together a side of how kids are impacted (positively or negatively) by technology.

Ward, Lucy. "Texting 'is no bar to literacy.'" The Gaurdian, 23 Dec. 2004. Web. 21 Nov. 2010. The causes and effects of texting for young kids is debated in this article. At a young age kids are more prone to text and be more technologically savvy. However, their literacy is effected by the amount of texting they do. Children that text less write more. Therefore, children that text more, write less and are less involved in their writing abilities. I will use this information in describing the effects of texting at young ages.

There is information relating to the past, present, and future uses of technology in this article. The coming of age and declaration of this integrated use had changed and effected many lives. A selection of students were chosen to be a test group. The study was researched to determine if technology has an effect on kids and their learning abilities.

This article focuses on how ICT's (information and communication technologies) have transformed reading, writing, and education. Written communication has become less formal and the syntax and layout has changed. However, technology has enabled students to engage in "creative and collaborative communication." It has also enabled the practice of writing through everyday activities such as texting. The Internet, especially, and cell phones can be used to facilitate learning when incorporated creatively into the classroom.

The differences in social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds of people and their use of technology was thoroughly described in this article. It also described the use of a digital world. The world is becoming more digitally based and the integration of technology is just getting started. The use of technology can greatly change the way we read and write and those effects are positive and negative.

Research was done on kids habits of instant messaging and the effects it had on their normal or traditional way of reading and writing. Kids that instant messaged wrote less than kids that did not instant message. A good point was made about how instant messaging is just like writing normal words but leaving out vowels and just using letters that make sounds similar to the words they are tying to write. Technology has given the use for more opportunities involving text messaging and instant messaging.

It shows the benefits and advancements that have been made through the world of techonlogy

This article describes a study in which college students were tested in a classroom setting to see if using a computer beneftied them on the exam. It shows that it is not always effective, and goes into detail about why it might not be. Techonological advances have changed the way we learn in many ways; however, this does not necessarily mean that it has been chagned in positive ways. The common misconception is that anything new and improved is always beneficial; this article shows that it's not always the case.

The article mentions that because kids are so involved in texting and instant messaging, teachers are coming up with new ways of explaining topics so kids understand it better. Texting and instant messaging have great impacts on our learning.

It gives examples on both sides of the argument of if technology does or does not affect literacy. This will help me whether I choose the positive or negative side for how technology affects literacy.

One reason for a decrease in Braille reading is the improvement of medical technology. There are more children today that are become visually impaired due to an accident and these children more than likely have multiple disabilities. These children's primary handicap is not listed as a visual one therefore it seems that children with visual impairments may be declining, and with that goes funding for Braille programs. Another reason is technology. It is easier today to convince Americans that technology is a better means for a visually impaired person to communicate than Braille. Also, there is discussion over many people turning to technology to communicate because learning Braille is difficult and time consuming. Finally, this article gives hope that these issues will be more widely recognized in the future.

This article deals with the idea of enhancing the ability to learn and comrehend teachers by using technological literacy. It includes teachers' responses on how they feel about technology in the classroom. It makes sense to expose a child to technology at a young age, because studies show that they will then be able to comprehend as opposed to later in life. However, not everyone agrees with this statement and the idea that technology should be able to be used in the classroom.

Johnson makes clear that in the United States there needs to me more emphasis on teaching Braille to young students. It shows the concerns that parents, teachers, and students have about visually impaired children are no longer learning to read and write Braille. Due to the advances in technology Braille has become obsolete. This article gives the different perspectives of both teachers and parents when it comes to their children learning Braille. Finally Johnson says that he believes that there should be more of an integration of visually impaired children into regular classrooms. He also knows that this will not be easy. Although the students will benefit from being in an integrated class room, they need daily contact with a teacher who specializes in working with visually impaired student.
