      hey bill. our research findings support this assertion and i want you to know that there is a positive and significant correlation between the percentage of course completed prior to the first day of the course and student (and faculty) satisfation and reported learning. Seems like building the airplane whilst in flight is not a good idea - the faculty experience is negatively impacted and the students also notice...
  • In other words, modifications can be done in a controlled setting. 
  • My emotions ran the spectrum from a little bit of anger at being asked to complete a task that I didn’t entirely think was realistic, to disappointment in myself that, even though I thought I had caught up, I obviously was still just treading water.  I’ve settled somewhere in the middle but regardless I decided to just put and shut up and make my way through the remainder of the course development process.
  • what I will take away from it is so much more than any all-nighter I might have put in.  I now feel confident to teach my own online courses and hope to begin implementing a hybrid online program in the 2010-2011 school year.   This class has given me that kind of confidence and I’m all the better for it.

  • Front-Row Tweets I get a good start on reflecting on my conference learning from the tweets I've posted to Twitter during the conference. This is how I take notes: I'm constantly processing the information as I hear it, tweeting the ideas I find valuable, which at the same time adds them to an archive of my tweets that I can review and reflect on later. Tweeting at conferences has also helped me build an incredible professional learning network, which is the greatest source of my own professional development year-round. My conference tweets are a chance to give back to the incredible educators in my PLN who share great ideas and resources with me daily. I know it's not for everyone, but I highly recommend it!

The Wooden Periodic Table Table - 1 views

  • This website documents, in great depth, a large collection of chemical elements and examples of their applications, common and uncommon. Click any element tile above and you will find probably more than you ever wanted to know about that element. All these samples (well, at least the ones that fit) are stored in a wooden periodic table, by which I mean a physical table you can actually sit at, in my office at Wolfram Research. I decided to build this table by accident in early 2002, as a result of a misunderstanding while reading Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks. I won't bore you with the details here (see the Complete Pictorial History of the Wooden Periodic Table Table), but once it was finished I felt obligated to start finding elements to go in it (because under the name of each element in my table there is a sample area). Then I started building a website to document all my samples, and that's when things really got out of hand. A few months later my little table won the 2002 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry, clearly the highest honor for which it is eligible. Sensing an audience, I began to take the website more seriously, which led to my being asked to write a monthly column for Popular Science magazine, which I've now been doing continuously since the July 2003 issue. Later I formed a most satisfying partnership with Max Whitby building high-end museum displays, selling element samples and sets, and filming video demonstrations of the chemical properties of the elements. This website now contains the largest, most complete library of stock photographs of the elements and their applications available anywhere, as well as a large and growing collection of 3D images documenting hundreds of samples rotated through 360 degrees. Try clicking on some elements in the table above: I think you'll be surprised what's lurking behind those little tiles. And if you like the pictures, you'll love the poster!   • Her example was “what does it mean to be human?”  The reason this struck a chord with me is that many students are either uninterested in research or they think that they are already expert researchers.  Unfortunately, very few of them have the research skills required at the college level.  This interview served as an important reminder to me that it’s my job to make the course both relevant and engaging.  I want to do my best at writing engaging and thought provoking discussion questions.
  • Pickett discusses the importance of establishing trust in the online classroom.  One thing that has been surprising to me but upon reflection makes sense is that this is about both design and instruction.  The icebreaker module takes on a new significance in this light – as it’s not only the launch of the course but also the launch of the community.

      I also like that digital storytelling allows for girls of all ability levels to participate. I could really make it a fun activity with the emphasis on the story itself, not their writing abilities.

  • I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take this class. I have learned so much and have really enjoyed being involved in a community of learners with all of you. I have never truly felt like I have been part of a community of learners before, or really knew what that was or meant. I think this has resonated so strongly with me that it is something that I want to strive for with students in a face-to-face class or an online class, whichever comes first.

Even though it is an online course, I had to treat it at times like a traditional course and block out an hour or two or three as if it were a class time. Then I was much more productive. Setting aside time for online courses is a must as many others have recognized. 2. If my life was sufficiently complex to hinder learning, how much harder it must be for young students who face much more challenging conditions. I have a very supportive wife and family, a car to get from place to place, an office and access to fast reliable internet. Many youth who we criticize for dropping out or doing poorly in school have no such supports or access. They live in unsafe conditions, lack examples and role models and may even be lacking basic necessities of life like food and safe shelter. These conditions are the real hindrances to learning and have been recognized as such for some time.

      This is not only demonstrated in the ask a question area of the course, but in the talk with the professor area, the Bulletin Board, and in the suggestion box area, not to mention the discussion area itself as well as via email. Have you not observed how i keep you on track in this course?

  • This was the most challenging course in my Master Degree career at UAlbany. I loved every minute of it. I think that pushing students to perform at higher levels helps them to break the plateu of what they think they are capable of. Usually they are capable of more than you think. It also helped my learning to use diigo and rate my posts. At first I thought it was painstaking and hard, especially when I spent an hour on constructing a post only to recieve a 2, but as I learned that it was more about teaching others, I began to perform better and was more motivated to teach something new and provide a cool resouce in diigo.

  • In a real very practical sense, my ability to connect to other people, is learning for me. My ability to find information sources through easy-to-use tools is learning for me. And ultimately, anything whether it's policy, government initiatives, copyright, or any other system that puts up barriers between me and my ability to connect to others and information, it is ultimately a barrier to my learning.

      I so agree Kimberly. I do wonder will you plan on helping your students to know how to find. My process was developed over my years working on my dissertation. My students only know Wiki. I think one of my first assignments is sending them to our college librarian for guidance, but then she will be doing the telling, and we all know how much you learn when you are told :)

      2004 - I am sure it has changed. It may have been the the SLN ID I was working and/or the classes I was taking. But I did see it more than a few times and it perplexed me. I definitely don't see it anymore so that is a good thing :-)

      odd... i actually in the early days strongly recommended that faculty have all their modules open from the first day so that students could see the structure and flow of the course from the beginning and have the structure help them not only anticipate what was coming, but act as advanced organizers to help students understand the scope and approach to the content taken by the instructor. I also didn't want faculty to use it as an excuse to not complete the course before it went live : ) I keep the modules closed in ETAP640 and reveal them one at a time because i don't want to confuse and overwhelm students. But, i have always maintained that work in previous modules should remain open and accessible so that students can refer back to or continue conversations if they want to. If you close a module then students won't have access to their own content. I would have to be convinced that under some very specific circumstance that there would be a good reason to do that. : )

  • I have increased my toolkit for engaging students at multiple levels. I feel I will be more vigilant about tapping into their basic human need for challenge, while attending to their narratives. Their storylines were not always part of my approach, but now I will be watching for those.
