    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe how plagiarism and the detection of plagiarism are interwoven with the education of international students. Design/methodology/approach - The literature searches encompassed articles on the issue of plagiarism as it affects students coming from abroad. Findings - There is a definite problem involved in the interaction of international students in a higher education setting and plagiarism. Research limitations/implications - Although no survey was done for this article, much of the information gathered regarding plagiarism is dependent on external surveys. These surveys may not always be answered truthfully despite anonymity. There is also a dearth of data on plagiarism and international students. There is some anecdotal data on the subject. Practical implications - Although plagiarism is a serious problem on academic campuses, libraries and librarians can offer substantial help in deterring and preventing plagiarism especially with regard to international students. Originality/value - Librarians, knowledgeable about citation style sheets and formats, can be very valuable to international students who lack the skills. Students can learn to improve their citation skills with the help of a librarian with good bibliographic skills.

  • It’s interesting to see the pendulum swinging the other way, and libraries wanting to go back to use-based/per-use charges. Harvard is recommending it for scholarly journal content.
  • It’s my understanding that the shift from per-use charges to flat charges was actually pushed by libraries (can anyone around then confirm this?).
  • Meanwhile, David Walker pointed out to me that the Copyright Clearance Center’s “Get It Now” service , which charges per-download for particulating publisher content, could be considered not just as an alternative to ILL, but as an alternative for libraries to flat rate “platform” licensing for scholarly content.

    The library is the part of the AbleData site that I will most likely use most in the course.  There is detailed information available in the consumer guides about particular assistive technology tools as well as a searchable database of articles and papers written about assistive technology.

    Since the audience of my course is mainly faculty and staff, I thought the library section of this site would be a valuable resource for them.  The library includes a searchable listing of articles and papers (which I have highlighted here) that they may use to learn more about assistive technology and see some of the research that is out there.

      "how to" video tutorials are an important element in most information literacy sessions and classes. The beauty of CLIP is that the videos are un-branded and are genericl enough that they can be used by any library or institution. The video library gives me a lot of options for my class.

      Hi Diana - LION is a bit like Merlot for librarians but more limited in scope as it's only videos. The quality is high and videos don't have any branding so that they can be utilized by any library.

  • Harvard’s annual cost for journals from these providers now approaches $3.75M. In 2010, the comparable amount accounted for more than 20% of all periodical subscription costs and just under 10% of all collection costs for everything the Library acquires. Some journals cost as much as $40,000 per year, others in the tens of thousands.

  • About articles rather than ebooks, but still relevant, rsinger alerts me to deepdyve. Described by some as a “netflix for scholarly articles”, it looks to me like they actually probably charge per-item fees rather than netflix’s flat rate for certain use limits model, but I’m not sure.
  • At one point, in the early days of digital online databases, libraries mostly paid per-use for online/digital fulltext. (And in some cases even per search). Then at some point  (around 15 years ago?) we started shifting to paying flat rate contracts for unlimited access to provider’s online collections.
