    The Private as default should be applied to annotations as well as bookmarks and highlights.

    Hi Bob

    For me, all of the following do default to private:

    * comments
    * highlights (I have added my highlight to this topic, readers should not see it)
    * notes stuck to highlights
    * floating sticky notes.

    I'm using the most recent Diigolet in Safari 3.2.1 (5525.27.1) on Mac OS X 10.5.5.

    Please:

    Are you adding annotations to a bookmark that was previously shared?

    When you add your annotations, are you

    1) using Diigo Toolbar?
    - If so, which version?

    or

    2) using Diigolet?

    or

    3) using Diigo web site (adding annotations to existing bookmarks)?

    Using FF 3, Diigo Sidebar, This URL/Annotations, Page Comments, Add Comment.
    Diggo 3.1.6.5

    Seems to be working now. Hmmm.

    Graham,
    You have to be very careful with the assumptions and with trusting Diigo too much with the privacy. I for one am very conflicted and I have very low confidence with the security of things marked private. I hope in the future Diigo will iron out the inconsistencies.

    For example, the highlight you marked private. Its true, I do not "see" it here, but it is not a "private" highlight. If I go to your bookmark list, it is displayed in all its glory. http://www.diigo.com/user/Grahamperrin

    Second bookmark down. You highlighted this text "Private as default should be applied to annotations"

    Highlights may not be AS critical as keeping words in comments private, but private is private IS private. Little inconsistencies like that harm the credibility and confidence in trusting Diigo to keep your data "private".

    WOW, here is one that is even worse!!! You highlight some text from your messages, EVEN A PRIVATE ONE, the highlighted text shows up in-line with your bookmarks to other users.

    Bottom line, do not annotate private messages, because you will be revealing that text in the annotation!!!

    Here is the privacy policy:
    1. For a private bookmark, other people can't see any highlights in this bookmark unless you want to a public sticky note.

    2. For a public bookmark, visitors can see your highlight in diigo site, but can't see them in the original page to avoid graffiti.

    3. For a public bookmark with private sticky note, the highlight is viewable but the sticky note is not.

    Scott is complaining about point 3, right?

    Highlights only have a private setting. That means to me that the only person who should be able to see them is me, regardless of if the bookmark is public. But what is worse, it reveals that information if you highlight a private message. For example, go to a private message you hold with one of your friends. Highlight some text in it, make sure its nothing you don't mind revealed. That text is now viewable by the public.

    Incidentally, I think highlights should be allowed to be public. The graffitti thing can be controlled from the reader's end with better filter controls of what is viewable and what is not.
