Australian Government Job Outlook Quiz - 0 views

  •
I found going through the Shift Workbook very insightful and it inspired me to look around for some additional quizzes that assess your areas of interest. For me, in the past, I have always been very analytical, interested in lab testing, anything in the sciences really, and have shifted toward a more person-focused career journey. It's so interesting to me to do these little quizzes and see that my results have completely switched to the "helping" profession! It's just 15 questions and I feel it's a nice and easy quiz for the younger population. It gives results for the following categories: helping, people, administrative, creative, technical, practical.

Studying the Impact of Technology on Work and Jobs - 2 views

  •
Theodre Lewis shows his relevant concern with the impacts of technology on work and jobs which Gratton and Fiedman have elaborated in their books The Shift and The World is Flat respectively. Lewis's imperative voice is that the vocational institutions have to incorporate the technological trends to the traditional concepts of education system in order to make students adaptable to current job market. He pinpoints that those whose who are engaged in career designing or teaching now require to focus "on changing skill needs, changing work, changing jobs, and the role that technology plays in such change, there is need for an ongoing related discourse." This information is relevant to the course contents we dealt with.

Is Mandatory Retirement Really Helping Business? - 0 views

  •
In part III, Gratton speaks to the positive affects of the five forces on one's lives. Demographics are mentioned. As mandatory retirement has been abolished in many jurisdictions, the changing demographics of workers living longer and thus having the ability to work longer may have positive and negative effects. This link is a survey of UK firms on the impact of mandatory retirement and the specific qualitative issues that may arise, such as enhancing customer service and employee performance, as well as the difficulties including less 'headroom' for younger workers and performance decline

Making a Living Sustainably: Green Jobs and Sustainability Careers - 0 views

  •
While this is a brochure put together by the Manitoba government, I believe it is still relevant to this week's discussions. It is a simple breakdown of how the workforce is changing, why jobs in sustainability are important, and what jobs, from all skill levels, can contribute to a growing and sustainable economy. I like that it breaks down the different types of sectors: green energy, manufacturing, green building and transportation, agriculture and natural resource management, green hospitality, community engagement, and economic development... You begin to see that there are sustainable jobs out there for anyone of any skill level.

Skoll World Forum 2013: Canada Should Take the Lead in Fostering Social Entrepreneurship - 0 views

  •
Posted: In this era of chronically tight government budgets, consider this: every year while Canadians spend billions of dollars on jails, courts, and police to prevent criminal inmates from re-offending -- with mixed results at best -- a prison outside London, England, has a strategic program to prevent recidivism that costs government almost nothing. On page 214, Lynda Gratton talks about social entrepreneurship and that it will continue to develop and become more important in decades to come. Craig and Marc Keilburger discuss some of the reasons why Canada is falling behind in the area of social entrepreneurism. They suggest that the government needs to set up structures to create these entreprises and allow easier access to start-up capital or loans.

Josh Kaufman: It Takes 20 Hours Not 10,000 Hours To Learn A Skill - 1 views

  •
"For career skills, the focus is on performing well enough to produce a result that's meaningful to you. For personal skills and hobbies, the focus is on enjoying the process and having fun. In these instances, the "10,000 hour rule" and the idea of "mastery" can actually serve as barriers to sitting down to practice - if you believe it takes that long to see results, you're less likely to start in the first place. The real priority is to practice enough to get the results you're looking for, not to attain a certain level of status or competitive performance."
