Online Virtual Events and Career Fairs for Recruiting and Networking - 0 views

  •
I came across this organization and thought it was worth sharing in relation to upcoming trends in recruiting and networking. Brazen powers online virtual events and career fairs for leading organizations around the world, improving recruiting, networking, and audience engagement. Their mission is to change the way people find professional opportunities and employers find talent. They also believe that everyone deserves a job they love, which is evident in their work setting (they don't work in cubicles, have access to snacks, lunches, and have comfy lounges to work in with a large screen TV). I don't know of many organizations myself that have these awesome perks at a workplace, but perhaps what this organization is starting is an emerging trend, as well as a new way of recruiting and expanded networking beyond LinkedIn.

Convergence 1 - (pg 204 of 3.0 edition, Friedman) "The convergence of the ten flatteners had created a whole new platform. It is a global, Web-enabled platform for multiple forms of collaboration. This platform enables individuals, groups, companies and universities anywhere in the world to collaborate - for the purposes of innovation, production, education, research, entertainment, and, alas, war-making - like no creative platform ever before" This website offers courses from "top universities and organizations worldwide". It allows students to listen to lectures, take quizzes, submit assignments and receive peer feedback. These can be taken from anywhere in the world and are taken at your own pace in a blended learning environment.

Volunteer Matrix: Who We Are - 0 views

  •
This web-tool was originally a special module of the web tools offered by Tools for Organizations since 2000. However, in 2010 it was released a stand-alone software for scheduling and managing volunteers for events and projects. The system allows volunteers to sign up for hours, once the event is completed the staff member then confirms these hours, and these hours are logged and tracked.

Measuring the Economic Impact of the Non-Profit Sector - 0 views

  •
In the first few chapters of Stanford's book - Economics is for Everyone - he speaks to how Economic Impact is measured in both the private and non-profit sectors in different ways. Having worked for non-profit organizations for a number of years, I was especially curious about how the economic impact of the non-profit sector is measured and found this great resource put together by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Especially enlightening is the PowerPoint presentation of International best practices for Tracking Economic Impact. Enjoy!

Mindcamp - A Community of Creators & Innovators - 0 views

In Gratton's chapters 5 through 7 this week I especially enjoyed the thoughts she expressed about innovation and how technology will facilitate creativity and innovation in and between workplaces. It reminded me of a Creativity/ Innovation conference that I attended for 2 years in 2011 & 2012 in Ontario. A group of over 100 creativity and innovation professionals from corporations like Disney, organizations like Facilitators without borders and entrepreneurs like those from FlipSkills & ThinkX come together for 4 days to share the latest and the greatest with each other. It's worth a look and I'd encourage you to register.

Informational Interview - 2 views

  •
One of the best ways to learn more about a specific industry, job, or organization is by connecting with professionals who are actually in the field. The technical term for this type of interaction is called 'Informational Interviewing'. Often the most current information about a career field, especially in a specific geographic location, may not be available in print or online resources. This resource gives great information on informational interviewing. It gives benefits of informational interviews as well as steps in conducting an informational interview along with samples of what one can say or questions one can ask.

What Is SEO / Search Engine Optimization? - 0 views

  •
SEO stands for "search engine optimization." It is the process of getting traffic from the "free," "organic," "editorial" or "natural" search results on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo have primary search results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users.
  •
I choose this website on search engine optimization to relate to Friedman's ninth flattener: In-forming. This resource explains how making your website popular through optimization influences the success of the web page.

From bean to cup: How Starbucks transformed its supply chain - 0 views

  •
This article works as one of the best examples to understand the new trends, the global chaining which has extensively been elaborated by Friendman in his book The World is Flat. When the Starbucks face a cost problem in its operational system, the company applied certain improvement steps and made drastic changes: a plan for organization, simplifying the complex, "one world, one logistics system," and earning the company's confidence.

This article provides a few helpful questions for those who are having difficulty differentiating between their own personal self and their organization. Employees often come to embody their organizational values and goals, especially if they are congruent with their own personal views. However, employees who are unaware of their self-disposition are likely to find they are unable to identify themselves outside of their organizational/working self. This article provides a few questions that clients, or any employee, can ask themselves to see whether or not they have lost sight of their personal values and traits that are unique to their person. These questions also have guiding descriptions, and provide advice on how to become self-aware.

How To Beat The Five Killers Of Virtual Working - 0 views

  •
This article provides preventative strategies for negative outcomes within virtual working environments. As the trend is currently increasing the ability of individuals to collaborate via the internet, the "killers" must also be made public, to ensure virtual organizations and employee teams can become aware and prevent the potential implications of working over the internet rather than in traditional work spaces. This enables work to continue to be innovative, rewarding, and meaningful to each employee.

This website was found as a link from the LEDC_London Economic Develoment Council. Particularly interesting as it demonstrates specific job classes, educational requirements and whether they are on the increase in the local region or not. Even has a section specific to Career Counselors! We offer access to local labour market, jobs, and training/education information for Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford counties.

Canada - footprint - 0 views

It is interesting to note that Canada's ecological footprint has stayed fairly constant over the time period depicted, however the biocapacity has fallen dramatically. This organization stated on the previous page that "... countries and regions with surplus ecological reserves-not the ones relying on continued ecological deficit spending-will emerge as the robust and sustainable economies and societies of the future." Based on this, it would seem that with careful ecosystem management, Canada could become one of these "robust and sustainable" economies, particularly in comparison to others such as the USA, UK and China which have already surpassed their biocapacity.

This organization focuses on helping people further their education in order to improve their standard of living. This really aligns with Chapter 5 in Friedman's book, as he discusses how low-skilled workers must improve their education in order to obtain better positions (229). They have to do this as the jobs they were doing have been outsourced to other countries.

I thought this was a particularly interesting website as it touches on a lot of things that Friedman has mentioned in his book; including the focus on this weeks readings on education and a knowledge-based economy. It has articles outlining how China is overtaking the U.S in terms of how much money is spent on science and technology funding for example, showing how the developing countries are catching up with us in terms of their high-skilled, more innovative work.
