The following articles originally appeared in one of ISTE's publications: our flagship magazine, Learning & Leading with Technology (L&L), the Journal of Research on Technology in Education, or the Journal of Research in Computing Education. This sampling of articles dealing with digital citizenship and related issues will be available to the general public for a limited time.

How will you prove your students meet NCLB requirements to be "technology literate" by 8th Grade? This free assessment is based on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S). The assessment questions are available in both Mac and PC versions. In other words, the screen shots used in the assessment questions match those of a Mac or PC. (The actual assessment is web-based and platform-independent).

FaceBook Safety Center - a revamped help portal featuring educational information for users, with sections dedicated to parents, teens, teachers and law enforcement professionals. The educator section contains quick and helpful advice for administrators, including advice for teachers with accounts and removing student profiles that are harmful in intent.

So far this year, at least 15 states have introduced or are considering bills or resolutions aimed at "sexting." The legislation generally aims to educate young people about the risks of sexting, deter them from the practice, and apply appropriate penalties to those who do engage in sexting. While some states are just encouraging programs to educate teens about the dangers of sexting, others are attempting to de-criminalize the act.

"In partnership with Topics Education, Microsoft is sponsoring an education initiative that supports teachers' needs for addressing digital citizenship and helping students understand how to handle and share digital content and respect for an authors/students intentions for sharing creative work. Topics Education developed a comprehensive turnkey, end-to-end curriculum that provides educators with teaching resources, an experiential student curriculum and tools to teach students about creative rights so that it is meaningful and relevant to their lives and achieving their potential."

School officials are justifiably concerned about when and how to respond to cyberbullying of educators. What actions, if any, should administrators and teachers take when faced with such occurrences? Which responses will stand up in a court of law? Educators' most important first response is to pause, step back, and take a deep breath. Administrators and teachers must avoid reacting to students' offensive online communications in anger or fear.

NCDC conducted a survey of International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) members last April to gain insight into educators' understanding of digital citizenship and classroom needs. U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez is proposing a federal grant program to research and educate children about Internet safety. Menedez, D-N.J., said he is hopeful that educating teenagers, teachers and parents will stop children from sending explicit photos of themselves over cell phones and the Internet. The grant proposal would authorize $25 million to $35 million each year for Internet safety programs. The grants would be awarded on a two-year basis and administered by the Department of Justice.

Possibilities is a national conference presented in recognition of nation missing Children's Month designed to offer quality training and information on topics and model programs of interest to leaders in the health and safety of our nations children: social workers, counselors, educators, child care and youth workers, law enforcement personnel, medical and legal professionals, parents elected officials, and other interested child advocates. Participants may attend their choice of a variety of workshops on child abuse and neglect prevention and educational programs or may select workshops for specialized training credits and professional development.

Doug Foderman and Marje Monroe of ChildrenOnline.org review concerns about Facebook and the risks for kids.\n\nThey have Facebook accounts and actually see it as a wonderful, and valuable, resource. However, just because Facebook says that anyone 14 years or old CAN use Facebook, doesn't mean that they should. It isn't an age-appropriate or developmentally healthy place for our children and younger teens to hang out. Facebook is not working to protect our children and the laws in our country are terribly inadequate to safeguard our children online, in general. Not enough is being done to protect and educate children and teens against the risks that come from using the Internet, and Facebook in particular. We (adults, parents, educators) need to do more.

Fair use is a doctrine within copyright law that allows use of copyrighted material for educational purposes without permission from the the owners or creators. It is designed to balance rights of users with the rights of owners by encouraging widespread and flexible use of cultural products for the purposes of education and the advancement of knowledge.

Microsoft offers this free digital citizenship curriculum to educators. The four units of study are all related to creative rights. They are downloadable as PDF files and include pre- and post-assessment materials. The program is aligned with ISTE Standards and the American Association of School Libraries. It is also endorsed by the National Council on Economic Education.

The Cost of Copyright Confusion for Media Literacy, is a research-based report on scores of longform interviews with teachers. It shows that the fundamental goals of media literacy education-to cultivate critical thinking and expression about media and its social role-are compromised by unnecessary copyright restrictions. The report concludes with a call for educators to develop a consensus around their interpretation of their most valuable copyright tool: fair use.This project was funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

My Pop Studio is a creative play experience that strengthens critical thinking skills about television, music, magazines and online media directed at girls. Users select from four behind-the-scenes opportunities to learn more about mass media: My Pop Studio strengthens media literacy skills, promotes positive youth development, and increases knowledge about health issues. Highly interactive creative play activities are used to create an online community that guides users through the process of deconstructing, analyzing and creating media. Video segments, flash animation, media deconstruction games and quizzes, and moderated blogs make the website lively, fun and educational. My Pop Studio was created by a team of researchers and media professionals at the Media Education Lab, located at Temple University's School of Communication.
