Students aren't getting enough instruction in school on how to use technology and the internet in a safe and responsible manner, a new poll suggests. Released by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and supported by Microsoft Corp., the survey found fewer than one-fourth of U.S. teachers have spent more than six hours on any kind of professional development related to cyber ethics, safety, or security within the last 12 months.

The study illuminates that there is no cohesive effort to provide young people the education they need to safely and securely navigate the digital age and prepare them as digital citizens and employees.

In 2006, legislation in the state of Virginia added a new component to the educational curriculum for GR K-12: Internet Safety for Students. This colorful 25-page Citizen's Cyberguide focuses on a middle school audience and integrates ethical standards that can promote their use of the web more wisely and responsibly. Includes information on general safety, social networking and gaming and is designed to help kids develop safety skills, cyberethics and respect regarding their behavior online. Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. Produced in Canada, this new interactive program targets middle school students. Designed for school usage, it explores the social and ethical challenges of the cell phone era. In some locations, it is used as part of the DARE program. The story is set in the fictitious BRAINCELLS HIGH, which is in turmoil. After students begin carrying cell phones, a group of older boys start to steal phones from the younger students. Eddie is the leader of the gang and he forces a younger computer geek named Oliver to hack into the school computer and "adjust" his grades. The venture creates an uneasy bond between the two teenagers. Oliver uses his cell phone to commit the crime for Eddie and Eddie eases Oliver into the inner circle of teens at the high school. Finally, Oliver has to make a decision. Will he go to the police? The story is told through quizzes, animations, activities and games.

The digital world can be tricky for teachers.Those who grew up in the pre-Twitter era are often left casting about to learn how to use new technology and keep up with students. Others, comfortable with using text messages and Facebook to make connections, find themselves questioning, as they navigate the new frontier, just where students fit in.

My message to parents and teachers is simple: embrace the technology that kids use, recognize that whatever you may lack in technology knowledge you make up in wisdom, and remember that you, too, were once a kid. Your first reaction to kid activity that may be a bit disturbing shouldn't be to freak out and shut down access but to take a deep breath, talk with (and listen to) the kids, and do everything you can to encourage dialog.
