These are my notes from Kevin Honeycutt's breakout session titled "" at the TTT conference in Wichita, Kansas, on 12 June 2008. Kevin's online safety website is mysafesurf.org. Yahoo session, Digital Citizenship Conference

Cyber Bullying: A Prevention Curriculum for Grades 6-12 is a curriculum that deals with attitudes and behaviors associated with cyber bullying. This eight-session curriculum is designed to:
1. Raise student and parent awareness of what cyberbullying is and why it is so harmful
2. Equip students with the skills and resources to treat eachother respectfully when using cybertechnologies
3. Give students information about how to get help if they, or others they know, are being cyber bullied
4. Teach students how to use cyber technologies in positive ways.

This district directly addresses a code of ethics about content posted to the web. The content of Arp ISD Website, DVDs, CDs, videos, PodCasts, streaming video sessions, and publications directly reflect on the image of the district and as such must be handled responsibly, ethically, and taken seriously. Publications and media are intended to be used for the communication of school information and the activities of classes, clubs, athletics and other school events. The content of these Web pages and publications follow the same guidelines as the Arp ISD's acceptable Internet use policy. Submissions to the site will not permit unacceptable, obscene, derogatory or objectionable information, language, media or images.

Meridian Education has been producing educational videos for over a decade. They recently released two videos in a series on CyberSafety and CyberEthics. They generously provide a 13-minute preview video clip that is actually quite complete and could be used in whole or in part at training sessions.

A court case from May 2007. It was a sophomoric online video criticizing the hygiene of a teacher. Is suspension a violation of the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech?

UPDATE: In a federal court session on May 23, 2007, U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman turned down the request of Gregory Requa, 18, to grant a temporary restraining order ending the 40-day suspension. "The court has no difficulty in concluding that one student filming another student standing behind a teacher making 'rabbit ears' and pelvic thrusts in her direction, or a student filming the buttocks of a teacher as she bends over in the classroom, constitutes a material and substantial disruption to the work and discipline of the school. "The 'work and discipline of the school' includes the maintenance of a civil and respectful atmosphere toward teachers and students alike -- demeaning, derogatory, sexually suggestive behavior toward an unsuspecting teacher in a classroom poses a disruption of that mission whenever it occurs.

Bullying by students - filming teacher in the classroom - targeting a teacher and posting on YouTube ensuing court case about the accountability of the Kent School Board for making a decision on punishing a student using unsigned, unsworn statements from anonymous students

The K12HSN Professional Development Cafe is a series of videoconferences around a variety of areas of interest for K-12 school personnel. Participation in these sessions is available through videoconferencing or through web streaming.

Cyberbullying: Using Virtual Scenarios to Educate and Raise Awareness [Research Paper: Discussion] Vivian Wright, The University of Alabama with Joy Burnham, Chris Inman and Heather Ogorchock Monday, 6/29/2009, 8:30am-9:30am WWCC 159, Table: 1 This session will teach educators how to use student feedback and reactions to scenarios created in Second Life to educate and raise awareness on cyberbullying prevention techniques.

Microsoft and ISTE have joined forces to put together a series of web literacy lessons, activities, and support resources to help students develop their critical thinking skills when searching the web. The new student-centered curriculum will provide guidance and activities for your students on how to search effectively, how to analyze "the anatomy of a search result," and moreover, understand how to judge the validity and source of the content they find on the web. This curriculum was developed collaboratively by ISTE and Microsoft and will be available soon free to educators.

Global SchoolNet's Projects Registry (PR) is the oldest (1995) and largest online clearinghouse for teacher-conducted global learning projects. The PR contains more than 3,000 annotated listings - and is searchable by date, age level, geographic location, collaboration type, technology tools or keyword. The PR is a central place for educators to find global partners and announce projects.

Teens and college students living the party life have discovered they may have a little too much information up on their web site. De-tagging - removing your name from a Facebook photo - has become an image-saving step in the college party cycle. "The event happens, pictures are up within 12 hours, and within another 12 hours people are de-tagging," says Chris Pund, a senior at Radford University in Virginia.

NASSP recommendations for school leaders 1. Familiarize themselves about all aspects of computer technology, including the mechanics of the Internet, blogs, social networking Web sites, and the liability issues associated with the use of these technologies 2.Form a technology team that comprises staff members, parents and students to act in an advisory capacity to the larger school community 3.Educate staff members and students on using technology within the boundaries of the law 4.Guide teachers and students on how the Internet can serve as effective educational tools 5.Formulate clear guidelines to protect students and teachers against cyber bullying and other criminal activities 6.Conduct orientation sessions for parents regarding student use of the Internet 7.Reinforce these guidelines with parents and encourage vigilance of Internet use at home, including the elimination of derogatory statements against other students or staff.

Suggested classroom use (4th-10th grade): writing, literature, history, technology/computer teachers, character education, leadership classes. Additional use: school-wide assemblies, school broadcasts, district streaming, counselor sessions, "back to school" programs on cheating/plagiarism, college prep, in preperation for assigning a major writing assignment,
