Social networks and digital media are making it easy for us to share our lives not just with our small circle of friends, but the entire world. With the invention of YouTube, Facebook and MySpace, we are creating a massive digital archive of our lives. The benefit of such a digital archive is that we no longer have to rely just on remembering memorable events: There are video and photos of it online. Besides just video and photos, there's also a massive text archive we are establishing with personal blogs. Every column I write for the Courier & Press is obviously archived for the history books, but so are the things that I write online.

Blog from Danah Boyd. Last week, she and three other social scientists participated in an Internet Caucus panel in DC. David Finkelhor (Director of Crimes Against Children Research Center), Amanda Lenhart (PEW), and Michele Ybarra (President of Internet Solutions for Kids) all presented quantitative data. Most of the press coverage of Michele and David's work has been consistently inaccurate in representing the implications of their findings. So they've helped clarify some of the misinterpretations. The Internet Caucus put the video up online so you can view the actual conversation.

One technique I used to push the learning connections and stretch students to higher levels of thinking is suggesting the use of comment starters to students. I encourage them to use these and encourage them to add to the list. These help students compose responses to posts at higher levels than just "I liked what you said" type of replies. It is a starting point.

The scribes in my classes continue to do outstanding work. I'm continually impressed by the depth and quality of the student's scribe posts. They work so hard on their scribes. Why do they do that? Most high school students look for the easy way out; "How can I get by with the minimum amount of effort on my part?"
