Another source for the MacArthur video, From MySpace to HipHop: New Media in the Everyday Lives of Youth -- a public forum on how digital technologies and new media are changing the way that young people learn, play, socialize and participate in civic life.

On April 23, 2008, public forum, "From MySpace to Hip Hop: New Media In the Everyday Lives of Youth," reported on the interim findings of the ethnographic project funded by the MacArthur Foundation, "Kids' Informal Learning through Digital Media," conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Southern California. This event addressed how digital technologies and new media are changing the way that young people learn, play, socialize and participate in civic life. The forum was presented by Common Sense Media, the MacArthur Foundation and the Stanford University School of Education.

a very powerful article about the need to improve how filitering occurs at schools or other public facilities like libraries; ignorance among people like the late Justice Rehnquist and other US Supreme Court justices is disconcerting; it appears that the 19th century education practices in the training and professional development of our doctors, lawyers and chiefs in service to us through our government exacerbate the modern day problems with technology use and an open society.

Department Hopes to Protect Children Online by Making 'Top Friends' of Them. Police are hoping that children who use MySpace will add the department to their lists of "top friends" to discourage sexual predators from contacting them. The police consider this a "beware of the dog" kind of friendship. But I wonder how many kids would actually do this.

This is a very thought provoking post and yet another one I wouldn't have read, had he not linked to my blog post yesterday asking for bloggers to share their links. This is a very powerful blog post. Wow! I personally think there is a balance here, but also agree than many are not considering the privacy they are relinquishing when they post things that don't belong out there for everyone to see. Internet privacy is an illusion, it really is.
