Microsoft, Intel, and Cisco-three technology giants that last year vowed to increase their efforts aimed at global education reform-have banded together to develop the next generation of assessments: tests that measure 21st-century skills and provide a global framework for excellence.

So far this year, at least 15 states have introduced or are considering bills or resolutions aimed at "sexting." The legislation generally aims to educate young people about the risks of sexting, deter them from the practice, and apply appropriate penalties to those who do engage in sexting. While some states are just encouraging programs to educate teens about the dangers of sexting, others are attempting to de-criminalize the act.

Many administrators, teachers, and parents simply associate MySpace and FaceBook with the term social networking, possibly adding Twitter to the mix and generally writing off the technology as an unsafe liability. However, we all need to expand our view of what social networking can be. Kid-friendly social media also doesn't need to mean Club Penguin and Webkins.

For updated information on new laws and legislation, you can go to your local senate website and search cyberbullying. Most legislation includes "cyberbullying", though the focus of the campaign was "bullying" in general. Many states require the local district to enact a policy.
