I do not know anything about dentistry, but I think if I participated in your unit I would learn a great deal.       Technology integration: Several web 2.0 tools used in unit. Will students have issues learning all these tools as well as the content for the unit, or will they be familira with technology enough for this to not be an issue?

      I am posting this on behalf of Melissa: Adrianna, In your unit, you included many web 2.0 tools such as: Blogger, Diigo, Google Docs, iGoogle, Twitter, Voice Thread, and Webspiration. In Lesson One, you incorporated Twitter for discussions. Group Discussions help create a connectivist structure to learning by allowing students to collaborate. You also had students create an iGoogle account, which allows them to create a central location for all of the tools required in the unit. A group blogger was also incorporated into the lesson. Students are asked to share the blog with the instructor and reflect what they learned, but it seemed the reflections were more individual than group. Your content on Dental Materials was well formed and you provided a lot of information, in very nice powerpoint presentations. It showed you put a lot of work into your unit. I feel you could have provided more assessment, but personal reflection is always a good form of assessment. I am somewhat confused on the blogger assignment, as it says to create a group blog, but the questions are more personal than group oriented. Melissa

      My unit just barely made it in my opinion with Connectivism if I understand the theory correctly. One thing that I did fail to integrate in this unit is group activities that led to continued prospectives for learning. One of the things that I did incorporate, however, were peer reviews and response questions on specific assignments. Although mediocre compared to some other tools, the peer review documents I used as assessment in this unit come in two formats. One was reviewing the various information in papers on the various learning theories,which exposes the adult learners to multiple perspectives on similar topics which may increase their learning and approaches to a specific topic/subject. The other document was used to determine if learning had occurred based on student samples. This is quite distinctive because it allows for the adult learner to learn information and perspectives from the students and not fellow colleagues. I have also requested that the adult learners peer review various projects in the module. Not only does this expose the adult learners to the various individual interpretations of the assignments, it also exposes them to the various usages of certain tools. I have also required that the adult learners use Twitter,blogs, wikis,etc to find useful information for papers. Although these are not professional sources, it again exposes the adult learners to the various interpretations of topics, concepts, etc from various individuals in society, not just colleagues. Examples in the Unit *Philosophy of Education Peer Review *Learning Theory Paper utilizing various social networks, blogs, wikis, forums, Delicious, Wikipedia,etc - access to information through various nodes, opinions, examples, interpretations,etc - peer review *Creation of a Social Network using Ning -allows for the adult learners to create an environment where the students can collectively learn from each other -using Twitter t

      At first I thought the video of this old guy was kind of different. Then it was interesting in the fact that here was this old guy embracing technology in a way that education has yet to do. It made a powerful point.

      Hi, Thanks Mr. Gilbert. I too found this video quite powerful because I know his age cohort probably had no idea that such tools would even exist. Although some of the baby boomers,etc may resist technology, I guess it still doesnt change that we live in a society that is built around a common factor, technology. In my opinion, its no longer an option to know and effectively understand technology, it is a necessity. Thanks. Mary

      Although my unit is focused on Higher Education professionals, I feel that I failed to provide a strong foundation for the unit. Even though some Higher Education professionals have PhDs,EdDs,etc, when it comes to effectively utilizing technology, you must provide the basics as if the professionals were a "blank slate." Although I expected the professionals to have a high level of computer literacy, there may be some professionals who don't have a high literacy for computers, but may still like to use web-based tools. Access to numerous tutorials for the various accounts I required to be created would have been reasonable since the adult learners would have to effectively use these tools to create the various products in the module. If you can't effectively use the tools, I shouldnt expect for effective products to be created either. Another weakness was the time to complete the assignments. If it takes us students two weeks to complete certain assignments that we have a reasonable background in, for individuals just beginning, two weeks wouldn't be enough to complete all the assignments adequately in each module. The assignments could be rushed, and the assessments may not reflect the true potential of the adult learner. Finally, I feel that I asked the adult learners to utilize too many potentially difficult technology and web-based tools during their stages of learning that could produce many moments of frustration and confusion.

      Hi, here's my peer review. Have a great holiday season. Content: A very well laid out unit. It is very obvious there was a large amount of work getting this done. It was worth the effort. The unit is very complete and ready to use. The three lessons start at introduction stage a progress to greater challenges. I think this is important to keep the learners engaged. The focus is strong on working with the Web 2.0 tools to acquire broad experience in the very diverse mixture used in the unit. Collaboration, and the learning it provides, is used in stealth mode through the peer reviews on almost all assignments. Goals and objective were clearly presented and the unit assignments are designed to reach those objectives. Technology: Wow! I counted seven different tools. The most interesting was Camtasia and Prezi. The use of the tools is smoothly integrated into the lessons with the more challenging at the later part of the unit. This was consistent with the units objective of starting "slow" and growing into "faster". I had a student tell me once he had learned a lot in the class, but didn't realize it until the end. This unit makes me think how much, and there is a lot of good stuff, the learners will get, but they won't know it till after. Instructional Strategies: The peer review used at several points in the unit ensures the learners share thoughts and suggestions. The learners for the most part, do their work and turn it in. I'm thinking that unseen will be the instructor's feed back to increase the learning experience. Assessment: Very complete for all assignments. The use of the complete rubrics lets the learners know what is expected. Reflection: This is a very complete unit. It is obvious a lot of work and thought went into the effort. The structure is logical and flows easily from one lesson to the next with more and more challenging assignments. Great Job!

      Hi Mr. Fitzpatrick, Thank you for your elaborate evaluation. It did take a while...lol. I agree with you with the feedback. As I was reviewing the lesson, I feel like most of the assignments were just a typical turn in requirement. I think I lost focus on the collaboration and was more concerned about the tools they were using to turn them in. I sort of reverted to the old attachment and send it to me in email. What I could have done was incorporate a twitter group, had all the students subscribe to it, place their assignments in google docs and provide a link in google docs, place the link on twitter, with a hashtag, have each person review two peers and provide feedback using maybe a youtube video or something. I think I started getting burned out in the end..lol. Again thanks for your reflection. ;) Good luck with the rest of the semester. Mary

      I agree. Unfortunately, most CMS do not offer such feature. If all courses apply Twitter as announcement application. It would be one place for all announcements.

      Satellites are everywhere=) Internet services offered though satellite appear to be slower than DSL... but companies say faster than dial-up connections. The cost is another consideration.

      Hmmm interesting. I stay in the country and was thinking about getting Hughes Net...guess not. I think one thing the government should do is make all these tools that will be the foundation of our interaction as a society able to be accessed. This would require some work, but Smartphones have become more than just a tool for everyday conversation, it is now a tool for educators, CEOs,etc.

      Yes but it's a new platform that will require more community generated apps, widgets, gadgets, etc. to broaden its compatibility.

      Google wave would not be embedded or added to a CMS. Rather, Wave could be the CMS itself. More plugin gadgets will be required for the admin requirements but the rest is already there. SAAS is releasing a competing product next February. There will be many such applications soon. The NAU committee should go open source and save the small fortune spent on subscription services. Happy to assist if you need me. I served on the Technology Taskforce at TUSD (2nd largest district in the State) last year.

      Amber, you might like using Posterous.com which allows posting right from your browser to "all" your online accounts with one click, including Flickr! Check it out. Very handy I'm finding. I locate something worth posting and with one button in my firefox browser, I can post to twitter, facebook, flikr, my blogs, EVERYWHERE. It's really powerful I think.

      How do you mean limited accesibility? I found that I could access our 647 wetpaint site from more access points than my Vista account. I liked the option of being able to access quite easily through my phone and also to monitor through my iGoogle PLE. Are you speaking in terms of difficult to access from a CMS?

      I also find this a weakness. I was introduced to Twitter this semester and I had to use my daughter's phone to submit my first assignment. I enjoyed using a smart phone and found it so convenient that I went and bought one for myself.

      Hi are you referring to the tools that are present in Microsoft Word,etc? If so, I agree that it doesn't offer enough individual creations. There are some limitations in this tool. I personally feel that it will not replace the popular word processing programs unless it includes the tools that allow for individualized creation.

      There are some very useful gadgets, but unfortunately there are some very bad and trashy gadgets as well. You really need to know how to select some gadgets as some work better than others as well.

You used lessons that embraced the learning theories that the units should have focused on: Constructivism and Connectivism. Technology: It appears your technology usage and unit production focused on a progressive learning experience. You used many Google tools, which seem to embrace the user, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and iGoogle. You also included a tool called SurveyMonkey, which could be used easily as an assessment tool. Instructional Strategies: I see that you used research and video to assist you in teaching the content. You also utilized many tools that would allow for students to learn from each other. Assessment: I do feel that you could have used some assessment tools for the assignments that could have guided the students and provided an overall analysis of their learning. Objectives would have also guided the learners and revealed some expectations. Overall, I think you had a simple yet informative unit. I would recommend a little more development in the areas of assessment and instructional strategies, but other than that, I think you did a good job. Mary

      Hi Joshua, Content: I have provided numerous floating messages on your website, but I wanted to say that your unit fulfilled its focus of teaching teachers how to integrate technology, specifically, Web 2.0. You used lessons that embraced the learning theories that the units should have focused on: Constructivism and Connectivism. Technology: It appears your technology usage and unit production focused on a progressive, elaborate, and challenging learning experience. You used many Google tools, which seem to embrace the user, such as Google Docs. You also included Webspiration which utilizes a chat component to support collaboration. You have also incorporated Diigo and Zotero, the latter, I had never heard of so I have learned something quite new to incorporate into my curriculum, web-based or face to face. Finally, as a PLE, iGoogle was used. I have personally found this tool to be extremely helpful, for it supports organization, collaboration, easy access, and updated content. Instructional Strategies: Your strategies used appear to place the learning as the learner's responsibility. There are also collaborative exercises that could increase the various perspectives of content, thus introducing new ways to solve a problem,etc. Assessment: Although you have included surveys and included a blog, I felt that a rubric would have been appropriate to use as well for guidance and assessment. Other than that, the pre & post surveys are good opinionated measurements to assess student progress. Good job. Mary

      That is true, but that is also a problem I think occurs in discovery learning and goes back to whether or not the thinking matters or the fact that an individual arrived at the correct answer.

      Some of the important strategies for my unit were making sure that the students were able to learn the concepts through researching information on a certain topic, and then posting what has been learned. These kinds of exercises allow students to interact with each other, forming new connections and new information. Students can learn alot from others and especially when allowed to interact in small groups, they can analyze other's opinions and come up with new and interesting ideas. As an example of this, I used the Twitter activity to get them to research, discuss among peers and post their feedback for others to learn from.For the last lesson I should have incorporated a peer review of the research paper and a reflection since only one rubric was used.

      Looking back on my unit, I think I should have taken a different angle in order to really cover connectivism theory and the instructional strategies for a network learning environment. I could have possibly made it a course for teaching instructors how to teach and create an NLE. I also should have added peer reviews, a few more web 2.0 or social networking tools, and more rubrics for evaluation.

      Common Question I: Aligned Connectivism Principles. The principles I integrated into my unit are: - Learning and knowledge emerges from diverse opinions: The community who is the target audience of my unit are recent graduates of our year-long supervisory core series. The focus of the community will be to identify their diverse needs for lifelong learning (continued learning beyond recent graduation), and finding common ground to explore together. Because they represent a wide range of occupations in the organization, their diverse perspectives in building solutions to supervisory challenges will be harnessed, their ideas improved by one another, and captured for others to refer to. This will be accomplished by exploration of articles through Google Reader, sharing of perspectives in relation to specific needs with the group through Blogger and Go-To-Meeting and bookmarking common interests. - Learning resides in and is accessed in non-human appliances: This target audience for my unit is well-exercised in sharing knowledge, and creating new solutions in a F2F environment (situated learning using constructivist strategies). With the creation of the network learning environment, using Google Reader, Delicious, Blogger and Go-To-Meeting to begin will lead them to discover knowledge in the digital environment, and mash it up with their own knowledge/experience to create a broader, more sophisticated, workable skill set for meeting the challenges of our workplace. - Nurturing connections to facilitate learning: As mentioned the community for whom my unit is designed are a bonded group. However, they have now graduated from their year-long program, and will not interact with one another as frequently as they did while in the program. The network community of graduates in my unit will have the opportunity to continue to expand their personal/professional relationships and continue to meet and learn together. As others graduate from the Supervisory Core Series, they will

      Common Question II: Weaknesses. 1. The primary weaknesses of my unit is that it is perhaps more structured than true network learning. This weakness is also a strength. I am using the structure to transition a community formed in the classroom to a community outside the classroom (group graduated from year-long supervisory training program at the end of November). My unit creates a network community by introducing the learners to tools for continued learning and networking. Structure was needed to catalyze the transition. 2. There is not forum for a more personalized level of social networking. I feel this is a real weakness, however, it is a planned weakness. In order to transition the community from F2F learning in the workplace environment to network learning, it is important to step them up to network learning (scaffold) gradually. To introduce Facebook or Diigo gadgets in the unit/site in the intial lessons would be distract them from the purpose of network LEARNING and lead them to think it is just SOCIAL networking. As they begin to use the unit/site to learn, I will introduce Diigo, Facebook and Twitter to create a more 'connected' group. The idea is that they will then be ready to use these tools for learning, and not abuse them in a way not allowed by our network policy (i.e., killing time aimlessly surfing and not learning/working). 3. The gadgets are not as robust as similar gadgets on iGoogle. This is a design flaw on my part. I assumed the gadgets available would be the same, and they are not. For instance, the Blogger gadget, doesn't allow one to make a blog post right from the window as the iGoogle Blogger gadget does. Similarly, there was no gadget available for Google Reader; I need to use an RSS Reader gadget built for news and adapt it for the feeds I wanted to include. By contrast the iGoogle gadet for Google Reader is very robust allowing users to go to Google Reader and update, edit, track, and bookmark feeds. Betsy

      Hi, First of all, WOW. This appears to be an outstanding project. I must tell you that your introduction promises a journey of learning. It is well organized. It includes various tools such as a feed, blog, and social bookmarking. The graphics really speak for themselves. Outstanding!

      Hi Mary, thanks for your generous comments. Google sites is certainly very easy. I started in WetPaint and switched to Google Sites. Google Sites has lots of great functionality, and is less confusing I think than WetPaint for the creator and the user to find things. I was a little disappointed, however, that the gadgets are not the same gadgets as in iGoogle. The gadgets in Google Sites are a little more cumbersome to set up and use.

      Evaluations: Each task had an evaluation tool. I think it is very important to know how the task is going to be evaluated before beginning. It can help clarify the assignment for the learner especially if directions are not completely clear on an assignment.

This clearly stated your goals and objectives for the unit, and what outcomes you hoped for. You incorporated Web 2.0 Tools into your unit, such as Citrix Go-To-Meeting (which I have never heard of, and plan to look into further), GoogleDocs, GoogleSpreadsheets, GoogleReader, Delicious, and Blogger. Your unit was very detailed, with many activities. In the first lesson, group presentation, assessment was conducted using a rubric, provided in advance for students to follow. In Lesson Three, you used self assessment. Collaboration was used as a focus in your unit in order to create a constructivist learning environment. I think your Unit was great, but I was slightly confused during it. ! One random thing I noticed is that Andy's Presentation did not state AM or PM for the time. There was also a lot on each page, and I almost felt overwhelmed. Otherwise, you did a great job! Melissa

    3. Lifelong Learning for Continued Professional Development-Goals and objectives are made very clear in this unit. Nice use of web 2.0 tools such as google docs, google spreadsheets, and blogger to support the network learning environment. Good creative ideas for a professional development unit by engaging learners in discussions, both synchronous and asynchronous, and using i-google to create a personal learning environment. I liked the idea of using blogger to post to others in sharing information that has been learned. Good job Betsy!
