Mindfulness: The Art of Cultivating Resilience | This Emotional Life - 0 views

  • Mindfulness is the practice of bringing our awareness to what we are experiencing in the present, both internally and externally, without judgment (Kornfield, 2009). I

A well spelled out definition of mindfulness
  • Compassion: You hold the intention not to judge yourself or others. You are mindful of your self-talk. However, if you do judge yourself, you don't judge yourself for judging. You are kinder and more supportive. If mindfulness brings the wisdom to see clearly, then compassion brings a loving heart (Neff, 2011). Acceptance: You increasingly accept the facts, which you can distinguish from the feelings. Acceptance isn't about "giving up". It is having the strength to "let go" of control and stop fighting reality. Openness: You're progressively open to viewing even the most difficult situations as opportunities for growth. You trust that they have something to teach you, and you expect to learn. Creativity: You draw on your power to visualize and create the results you desire. At the same time, in the spirit of acceptance, you are not attached or fixated upon your own expectations.

A Better World By Design 2011- Sept 27-29, 2013 - 0 views

This tittle is very well written and very quotable. This could be argued as the answer for the meaning of life. Simply take, then give back to the world, repeat. In my opinion this is a good three step process to live by.
  • We do have an ethical responsibility.
  • With incentives often misaligned from the greater good, I have come realize how difficult this commitment truly is and how important it is to develop supportive environments for designers and creative professionals to channel their energies in the most wholesome way.  We should relentlessly ask not only how to design things better, but what a better world really means.

  • t is precisely because innovators have the tools to bring about positive and visionary change that there should be an emphasis on ethics in creative work, entrepreneurship, and capitalism.

This strikes me as very controversial. The author claims that it is essentially the moral responsibility for the design for the purpose of bettering the world. As poetic that sounds, in reality designers often build with the intent of personal capital gain.

Hong Kong airport glory days: Breathtaking photos - CNN.com - 0 views

Though, it may seem odd that im annotating an article about the defunct Kai Tak Airport.  This airport does seem to relate to the concept of mindfulness and the process of focusing on one task at a time.
  • "Passengers lucky enough to have a window seat had a fantastic view of the south side of Hong Kong Island, then Central and the harbor before landing over Kowloon."
    • Alyssa Lau

This portion of the article is highlighted because it explains that even though the task at hand is difficult, those who seek the opportunity, those who are lucky or fortunate, get to have a some sort of "fantastic view" on life.  This view may impact their life.

"Landing in Kai Tak was a hair-raising event even for experienced pilots."  Even though, a person may think that a task is simple and easy to do, even the most experienced person will have some difficulties trying to get the task done.

The US fashion industry: A supply chain review - 0 views

  • These plans are usually based on strategic alliances and are taking over the responsibilities of buyers.
  • The buyers have tremendous power in representing the chain to the vendors and are responsible for a large portion of the chain's profit. Since the buyer's performance evaluation criterion (and his or her bonus) is the total profitability (total margins) of the apparel lines he or she buys (which depends on the purchase cost, the initial selling price, the subsequent mark-downs and the units sold under each price point), it is in the buyer's interest to ensure that she buys the right items generating the best financial results for the chain as a whole.

Using help from others goes away from practicing mindfulness and becoming self aware. It's a little ironic that sources saying to not take help from others are others themselves, and people reading the article are taking direct help from others
