"A woman admitted Monday to fabricating a report of a sexual assault in an unincorporated portion of Santa Ana, authorities said. A day after telling Orange County Sheriff's Department officials that she had been grabbed from behind, dragged to a dirt lot and sexually assaulted in the 18000 block of Ervin Street, the woman admitted to deputies that she had made up the report, said Jim Amormino, a Sheriff's Department spokesman. Sheriff's deputies Monday contacted the woman, who they did not identify, on an unrelated matter when she admitted to the false report, Amormino said. The woman was admitted into a hospital for a 72-hour mental-health hold, Amormino added."

Of the 90,427 forcible rapes reported in 2007, 40% were cleared by arrest or "exceptional means" (FBI, 2008d) with 23,307 of those being arrests (FBI, 2008b). Clearance of a report by exceptional means occurs when the known suspect dies before an arrest is made, when the victim refuses to provide the information or assistance necessary to follow an investigation through to an arrest, or when the known suspect is being held in another jurisdiction for a different crime and extradition is denied. In order to clear a case by exceptional means, the officers must have an identified suspect, know where he can be found, and have enough evidence for a legal arrest.

"A spurned lover whose cry of rape cost police coffers £10,000 was jailed for nine months yesterday. Belfast Crown Court heard that Lisha Tait cried rape after being given the "cold shoulder" in a Belfast nightclub by a man she had a previous liaison with. The 22-year-old, from Laurel Lodge in the Flush Gardens area of Lisburn, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. The charge relates to making a false report and two false written statements to police on dates between July 6 and August 15, 2013 claiming she had been raped. Crown prosecutor Simon Jenkins said the series of events began in the early hours of July 7 when police received a call from the Ambulance Service in relation to a distressed woman who claimed she had been raped outside the Odyssey complex in Belfast. After making the claim, Tait was taken to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Antrim, where she was examined."

"KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) - The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office says a Kingsport woman is behind bars after she admitted to making a false rape claim.  Wednesday, deputies received a call of a rape at a home on Poplar Grove Road in Kingsport. When officers arrived, they found broken glass inside the home and a torn shower curtain. Amanda Rowland, 36, told authorities someone entered her home while she was in the shower and proceeded to rape her. Rowland also told investigators that her ex-boyfriend received text messages saying that she was going to be raped. She was taken to the hospital. After interviewing Rowland's ex-boyfriend, investigators found out he had been receiving text messages concerning the rape for the last couple of days from different phone numbers. He told police that he advised his ex to leave the home."

"An innocent man spent 12 hours in custody after being falsely accused of sexually assaulting a young mum. Joanna Robertson also cost police 69 man hours - at least £1,380 - investigating the complaint that the man had stalked her and forcefully touched her, Dundee Sheriff Court heard. Robertson, 25, of Leith Walk, pleaded guilty to a charge of wasting police time on July 6 last year. After admitting she had made up the sex attack, Sheriff Richard McFarlane deferred sentence for reports and granted her bail. The court heard Robertson went to police HQ in Dundee and claimed she had been stalked through the city centre before being pushed against a wall and attacked."

"W hen Gerard Richardson stood trial in Somerset County in 1995 for the brutal murder of a 19-year-old Elizabeth woman left for dead in a ditch in Bernards, a forensic dentist testified there was no question it was Richardson who left a bite mark on the woman's body. The testimony of Dr. Ira Titunik, a forensic odontologist, is largely what led to the conviction of Richardson for the February 1994 murder of Monica Reyes and a 30-year prison sentence handed down to him. But last year, analysis of DNA extracted from saliva left in the bite mark proved it wasn't Richardson at all who had bitten the victim, but someone else who has never been identified. Richardson, 49, walked out of a courtroom a free man in December after being wrongfully imprisoned for 19 years. He is the only defendant in New Jersey wrongfully convicted on bite-mark evidence to be exonerated."

More than 2,000 people who were falsely convicted of serious crimes have been exonerated in the United States in the past 23 years, according to a new archive compiled at two universities. There is no official record-keeping system for exonerations of convicted criminals in the country, so academics set one up. The new national registry, or database, painstakingly assembled by the University of Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law, is the most complete list of exonerations ever compiled. The database compiled and analyzed by the researchers contains information on 873 exonerations for which they have the most detailed evidence. The researchers are aware of nearly 1,200 other exonerations, for which they have less data.
