A woman has been fined £80 for wasting police time after making up a false allegation of attempted rape in Swindon. The 21-year-old claimed she had been grabbed by a man as she walked around Liden Lagoon earlier in the month. A man matching the description given by the woman was later arrested. Police said the woman had now admitted to making up the entire incident and she had received a fixed penalty fine for the offence. Det Insp Mark Garrett said: "Wiltshire Police take any reports of sexual assaults incredibly seriously and will use all available resources to bring perpetrators of these crimes to justice. "This inquiry has taken up a lot of police time and resources but also resulted in an innocent man being arrested on suspicion of a very serious crime."

A WOMAN has been interviewed by police after admitting making a false allegation of rape. The 26-year-old claimed she was leaving the ground-floor level of the Wellington Square shopping centre car park in Stockton-on-Tees last week when a man approached her from behind and sexually assaulted her. Police launched a media appeal for information and arrested, and bailed, a 22-year-old man in connection with the incident. However, the woman then admitted she had made a false allegation. The man has now been released with no further action to be taken. Police have passed the file for the case on to the Crown Prosecution Service, who will decide whether to prosecute the woman.

A JEALOUS boyfriend told his girlfriend to make up a rape allegation against the man she had been unfaithful with, a court heard. The claim led to alleged victim Zabir Khan being arrested on suspicion of rape, interviewed and locked up in a police cell. He also had intimate swabs taken. The claim was made by 23-year-old Husen Patel's girlfriend, Jade Leech, after Patel punched her in the face when he found out she had been unfaithful with Mr Khan, her cousin's boyfriend, Bolton Crown Court heard.

Elizabeth Jones, 22, admitted she lied about the latest rape allegation because she "did not like" the man she accused of attacking her, Southampton Crown Court was told. Her latest victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested and questioned for nine hours before being released without charge. After a judge jailed her for 16 months, it emerged today that she made her first complaint in 2004 aged just 13 before alleging other men had attacked her over the next nine years. In 2009 she was given a ten month detention and training order for a similar offence. Between 2005 and 2007 she had made eight other allegations, which police investigated, but she was never charged.

Police say a man who claimed he was sexually assaulted by two male attackers had "made the story up". Officers have now cancelled an investigation launched after the 20-year-old said he had been subjected to an attack in Carlisle during the early hours of the morning. The force confirmed the man who made the allegation admitted last night that it did not actually happen. The inquiry had been launched on Sunday night after police were told a man was assaulted as he walked home alone "in the vicinity of" the Lower Viaduct area on Saturday morning. Investigations had focussed on allegations he was pushed into a car park by two male attackers and "subjected to a serious sexual assault".

A woman who repeatedly accused her ex-boyfriends of raping her was today jailed after escaping justice for nearly a decade. Leanne Black made false rape claims against five different men over a period of eight years, but escaped justice until now. The 32-year-old used the rape allegations to get revenge on her partners after arguing with them - but a judge accused her of harming genuine rape victims with her lies. Black was sentenced to two years in prison at Newport Crown Court after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice. In one case, she told police that her ex had drugged and raped her, and in another she claimed that a boyfriend had kidnapped her before violently abusing her. The innocent men could have faced up to five years in jail if they had been found guilty of raping her.

A teenager has been given a caution for wasting police time by falsely claiming she was raped in an attack in Surrey. The 18-year-old, from London, made the allegation in Ewell on 30 June. She was found in the Cox Lane area and police said they spent much of the day interviewing people. Specialist officers also offered her support. But later that evening, the woman told officers the allegation was false. Det Insp Antony Archibald said such reports were "deeply frustrating". Surrey Police said said a "lot of staff" had been involved in investigating the complaint. Mr Archibald said vital resources had been taken away from other people who may have needed them. He added: "We have carefully considered what action could be taken against the woman and it was decided that a caution would be the most suitable form of punishment." He urged genuine victims of sexual assault to continue to contact the force.

Victor Nealon, 53, was living in Redditch, Worcestershire, when he was convicted of attacking a woman in January 1997 and jailed for life. New DNA evidence revealed the presence of another man's genetic material, three Appeal Court judges were told. Mr Nealon's barrister said the evidence was "dynamite" for his client."

A FALSE claim of rape by a Ramsgate teenager was "a cry for help" according to her mother. The 19-year-old made the allegation that she had been a victim of sexual assault in Boundary Park at 2am last Friday. Police cordoned off the park and had forensic officers on the scene following the claim and put out an appeal to find the "suspect," described as aged between 40 and 45, 6ft tall, of large build and with wrinkles on his face, particularly around the cheeks. But the following evening police said they were no longer appealing for information and revealed the woman who had made the allegation had been formally cautioned for wasting police time.
