Bilingual Spanish and English speakers appear to have an advantage over monolingual individuals, with bilingualism shaping word learning and memory capacity. Specifically, early bilinguals performed better than monolingual individuals and late bilingual learners. There were two mechanisms discussed at the end of the study. The first is based on the critical-period-based phenomenon. The second is based on longer exposure to the two languages, which contributes to bilingual advantages.
