A List Apart: Articles: Faux Columns - 0 views

  •
This column offers a helpful "cheat" for programmers seeking to have a vertical background color extend all the way down the page. A quirk in CSS sometimes results in making it difficult for columns to extend the full length. The solution is to create a vertically tiled background image that "forces" vertical columns to extend all the way.

This is a web hosting company I've used for the past six years or so. It used to be called Catalog.com. I give it a decent rating. The administrative control panel interface is easy. Hosting packages provide for MS SQL Server, wordpress installations, metrics, spam sharks, email, ecommerce, php and fairly speedy support help. One annoyance: Webhero is constantly changing its price structure every 6 months or so. Sometimes hosting is free, then it costs a little, then it is free again. Economic survival online is an art these days, (I work for a newspaper) so I can't blame them too much. I currently own three domain names, and all of them are registered with this company.

What's the difference between naming an HTML file with .html or .htm? Both work, right?
    • Alex Halavais

HTML is the "correct" choice, though .htm will also work. The latter is a result of limitations of the early DOS & Windows systems, which could only handle 3 letter extensions (and 8 letter filenames). Why is it still used today? Microsoft continues to push it as a feature, not a bug, and those using MS servers or ASP are more likely to use it, unless, of course, it is a .asp page. But the standard usage is still .html.

Adds a toolbar to Firefox with tools and drop-down menus that provide a means to create and view various parts of CSS and Html files. Seems to be useful as a learning tool as well as a development tool.

Missed closing the "header" div (that is, you're missing the closing bracket). Haven't tested to see whether it renders in browsers other than Firefox, but need to be careful of such issues. Good job here.

I read through this site and the tutorials. It was a little on the wordy side, but for me, it's almost a bit easier to understand. For those of you who are still teetering on CSS, this might help, it's working for me. (I'm not getting paid to say that either :-P)
