Platypus Wiki is a project to develop an enhanced Wiki Wiki Web with ideas borrowed from the Semantic Web. It offers a simple user interface to create wiki pages with metadata based on W3C standards. It uses RDF (Resource Description Framework), RDF Schema and OWL (Web Ontology Language) to create ontologies and manage metadata.Platypus Wiki is an ongoing open source project started on 23th December 2003. The project is actually hosted on SourceForge and licensed under GNU GPL.

A semantic wiki engine is a specific kind of wiki engine that extends the wiki's function of collaborative content management with Semantic Web technologies. It is thus also a kind of Semantic content management system. Some, but not all, semantic wikis should also be classified as Ontology editor or Semantic annotation tool. A semantic wiki is a wiki that stores some portion of its data in a way that can be queried elsewhere. Typical uses of such data include querying it within the wiki (sometimes using standard query languages like SPARQL), aggregating it in displays like tables, maps and calendars; exporting it via formats like RDF, OWL or CSV; and reasoning with it, to calculate new facts from the given facts. Semantic wikis do not necessarily need to include standards or technologies considered part of the Semantic Web, although they usually do, to some extent.

KnowWE implements a (refined) concept of semantic wikis: Besides basic ontological knowledge - such as the definition of classes, taxonomic and user-defined properties - KnowWE is able to represent problem-solving knowledge that is applied on selected classes of the ontology. Every wiki page embeds not only semantically annotated text and multimedia but also explicit problem-solving knowledge. Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is a free, open-source extension to MediaWiki - the wiki software that powers Wikipedia - that lets you store and query data within the wiki's pages. Semantic MediaWiki is also a full-fledged framework, in conjunction with many spinoff extensions, that can turn a wiki into a powerful and flexible "collaborative database". All data created within SMW can easily be published via the Semantic Web, allowing other systems to use this data seamlessly.
